In an industry often accused of being obsessed with the “aspirational” energy of youth, veteran filmmaker and actor Saurabh Shukla is making a bold case for the silver-haired. With his upcoming directorial venture, Jab Khuli Kitaab, set to premiere on ZEE5 this March 6, Shukla is challenging the long-standing Bollywood notion that romantic comedies are a playground reserved exclusively for twenty-somethings.
A New Chapter for “Mature” Romance
Jab Khuli Kitaab, adapted from Shukla’s own acclaimed stage play, features powerhouse veterans Pankaj Kapur and Dimple Kapadia in the lead roles. The story centers on Gopal and Anusuya, a couple whose fifty-year marriage is suddenly upended when a long-buried secret comes to light.
Speaking at a recent promotional event, Shukla was candid about the lack of “grown-up” stories in mainstream cinema. “We have reduced mature romantic dramas significantly,” Shukla noted. “Maybe it’s a marketing thought—the idea that you can just replace older characters with a younger couple to make it ‘sell.’ But why should romance belong only to the young?”
Beyond the Stereotypes of Aging
The film aims to break the stereotype that life after sixty is devoid of excitement or conflict. Shukla points out that the humor and “fun” experienced by older generations are often overlooked or dismissed.
“The idea that older people are not having fun… that notion should end,” Shukla remarked with his signature wit. “I think the amount of fun older people have is not funny at all. It’s raw, it’s unfiltered, and it’s deeply honest.”
For Shukla, the decision to cast Kapur and Kapadia wasn’t just about their legendary status, but about the “truth and rootedness” they bring to the roles. Pankaj Kapur, playing Gopal, echoed this sentiment, praising the script for its “tenderness” and for treating this stage of life with “dignity and authenticity.”
A Bittersweet Family Drama
While the film is being billed as a mature rom-com, the trailer hints at a deeply emotional “bittersweet” journey. When Anusuya (Kapadia) reveals her secret after waking from a coma, Gopal (Kapur) decides he wants a divorce—after half a century together.
The ensuing chaos involves their grown children and a young, struggling lawyer played by Aparshakti Khurana, who becomes a “mirror” through which the elderly couple must confront their past.
“It’s about real people facing uncomfortable truths,” Shukla explained. “Love doesn’t fade with age; it evolves, it bruises, and it heals. Jab Khuli Kitaab is about the beautiful possibility of rediscovering each other even after a lifetime together.”
The Verdict
As the industry shifts toward heavy-hitting action and high-octane blockbusters, Jab Khuli Kitaab stands as a quiet, confident reminder that the most compelling stories often happen behind closed doors, in the messy, humorous, and heartfelt reality of a long-term marriage.
Jab Khuli Kitaab stars Pankaj Kapur, Dimple Kapadia, Aparshakti Khurana, and Samir Soni. It premieres on ZEE5 on March 6, 2026. To know such latest updates tuned tellyboosters.com Thank you!
