The entertainment industry is abuzz following explosive claims made by veteran actor Yatin Karyekar regarding the working style of cinematic legend Kamal Haasan. Having shared screen space with the multi-talented star in acclaimed projects like Hey Ram and Vasool Raja MBBS, which was the official 2004 Tamil remake of Rajkumar Hirani’s Bollywood blockbuster Munna Bhai M.B.B.S., Karyekar opened up during a candid interview with host Siddharth Kannan. The actor directly labeled Kamal Haasan as self-obsessed, claiming that the superstar’s intense desire to protect his invincible on-screen image led to a significant alteration of a crucial, emotionally heavy scene from the original movie. Karyekar recalled that the memorable sequence where Jimmy Shergill’s character slaps Sanjay Dutt in the Hindi original was completely watered down during the Tamil remake because Haasan was completely unwilling to allow his character to appear weak or vulnerable to the audience.
According to the seasoned performer, Kamal Haasan adamantly refused to let the slap happen on set and unilaterally decided to replace the powerful slap with a simple physical push. Karyekar shared that the assistant director on set appeared visibly stressed and uncomfortable while this sudden creative modification was being pushed through by the leading man. The actor confessed that he was deeply surprised by the superstar’s reluctance at the time, remembering how he questioned why Haasan had such an issue with the scene when an actor of Sanjay Dutt’s stature had absolutely no problem executing it for the sake of the story. Karyekar firmly believes that by removing this moment of vulnerability, the Tamil version ultimately lost a large chunk of the raw emotional depth and impact that made the original Hindi masterpiece so globally memorable and beloved.
Expanding on his critique of the film’s creative choices, the veteran actor also pointed out that the iconic father-son dynamic could not be properly replicated in Vasool Raja MBBS. In the Bollywood version, Sunil Dutt brought a towering sense of natural paternal authority that grounded Sanjay Dutt’s character, creating a beautiful emotional anchor for the narrative. However, Karyekar observed that no actor in the Tamil industry could truly command that kind of severe presence over Kamal Haasan, noting that nobody could comfortably shout at or dismiss the superstar on screen, which inadvertently shifted the tone of their familial relationship to be much more comedic and light-hearted rather than emotionally intense. Furthermore, Karyekar alleged that Haasan deliberately welcomed public controversies throughout his career to ensure his movies stayed in the media spotlight, recalling a dramatic incident during the filming of Hey Ram where the star protested a flight delay by sitting directly in front of an airplane. Despite expressing his strong disagreements with how the iconic actor managed his public persona and on-set changes, Karyekar clarified that he maintains immense respect for Kamal Haasan’s unparalleled technical brilliance as a filmmaker and storyteller.
