The ongoing peaceful protest at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar has caught the attention of the entertainment world after popular actor Omi Vaidya, famously known for playing Chatur Ramalingam in the blockbuster film 3 Idiots, made a public appeal for climate activist and education reformer Sonam Wangchuk. The actor released a heartfelt video on his social media platforms urging citizens to pay closer attention to the deteriorating medical condition of the reformer, who has been on an indefinite fast for nearly three weeks. Invoking the beloved cinematic character Phunsukh Wangdu, which Aamir Khan played and which was famously modeled on the real-life work of Wangchuk, Vaidya stated that he does not want to see the real-life inspiration behind the iconic movie role lose his life. Recalling his personal interactions with the activist, the actor described him as an exceptionally humble, brilliant, and hardworking individual who has dedicated his entire life to bringing educational reforms and sustainable solutions to local communities, making his current physical suffering a matter of deep national concern.

As the demonstration in the national capital continues, medical professionals supervising the protest site have flagged critical concerns regarding the activist’s vital signs. Reports indicate that Sonam Wangchuk has lost over eight kilograms of body weight, accompanied by a sharp and dangerous drop in his blood sugar levels and blood pressure. Despite the physical toll the strike is taking on his body, the reformer has refused to back down from his stance. The agitation, organized in collaboration with the Cockroach Janta Party, primarily demands the resignation of the Union Education Minister following the highly controversial national exam leak scandal and seeks financial justice for the families of impacted students. The protest organizers have also announced a planned march toward the Parliament building on July 20 to coincide with the beginning of the monsoon session to further elevate their demands.

While mainstream media coverage has been relatively limited, several other eminent figures and social activists have begun adding their voices to the movement. Prominent personalities, including author Arundhati Roy, veteran actor Naseeruddin Shah, and actor Ratna Pathak Shah, recently issued a joint statement urging Wangchuk and his fellow hunger strikers to preserve their physical strength and call off the extreme fast, emphasizing that the struggle for reform is a long-term battle rather than a brief sprint. Omi Vaidya echoed these sentiments by asking everyday citizens to take a moment out of their busy daily routines to research the protest and use their personal social platforms to write to local public representatives to demand a swift government response. As public anxiety grows over the deteriorating health of the real-life Phunsukh Wangdu, pressure continues to mount on the administration to step in and address the demands before the situation turns fatal.
