Veteran television actor Shagufta Ali, who has spent decades in the Hindi television industry, has expressed deep disappointment over the changing work culture and declining professionalism on modern TV sets. In a candid interview with digital host Siddharth Kannan, the seasoned performer opened up about the stark contrast between how television shows were filmed in the past compared to present-day productions. Shagufta lamented that basic decorum and respect, or tameez tehzeeb, have virtually vanished from sets, leaving senior artists feeling alienated and frustrated. She pointed out that many young actors today do not even observe simple social courtesies such as offering a basic greeting like “Good Morning” or “Hello” when arriving on set, emphasizing that this is a sentiment shared by almost every veteran actor who has witnessed the industry’s evolution.

Highlighting the major factors disrupting production environments, Shagufta slammed the complete lack of discipline and focus among many newer actors. She noted that smartphones have become an overwhelming distraction during shoots, revealing that actors often stay glued to their screens even while standing in the background of a shot. According to her, instead of staying in character and reacting naturally to co-actors, performers frequently ignore scene requirements, forcing directors to shout instructions repeatedly over microphones without receiving any response. Furthermore, she pointed out how traditional acting preparation, such as dedicated rehearsals, has been completely pushed aside in favor of self-obsessed behavior like checking monitors, taking selfies, and clicking photographs between shots.

The actor also spoke out against the disrespect shown during actual camera takes, explaining that chatter often continues despite sound recordists and directors calling for silence. Calling it deeply disheartening, Shagufta admitted that watching such lack of seriousness on set feels like being stabbed repeatedly. She recalled how her generation maintained utmost respect for directors regardless of personal feelings or competence levels, whereas modern sets often descend into chaos where directors are constantly shouting to maintain control. Recently, Shagufta had to step away from a major role in the popular serial Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai due to personal health issues, but her sharp reflections on the television industry’s changing environment have sparked a broader conversation about professional ethics and decorum across social media platforms.
