Acclaimed Malayalam filmmaker Jude Anthany Joseph recently made a surprising and bold revelation about why he decided to step away from his highly anticipated Bollywood debut film starring Ayushmann Khurrana. During a recent media interaction while promoting his newly released Malayalam thriller Thudakkam, the talented director opened up about the major creative differences that ultimately led to the abrupt cancellation of the massive Hindi project. He disclosed that after the nationwide success of his previous work, he had penned a compelling storyline that instantly attracted immense interest from several major film industries across the country. In fact, he received lucrative offers from nearly sixteen prominent production houses spanning Tamil, Telugu, and Hindi cinema. Despite the overwhelming choices, he ultimately chose to collaborate with Ayushmann Khurrana’s team because he strongly envisioned the story as a proper Bollywood feature film. While the initial discussions were highly positive and encouraging, the ambitious collaboration eventually hit a massive roadblock over the casting of Malayalam cinema legend Mohanlal, who was supposed to play a highly significant and specially written character in the core narrative.
The unforeseen conflict primarily began when the project faced continuous delays and the production team kept stretching out the creative discussions for nearly seven months without making any firm commitments to the project’s development. Frustrated by the prolonged wait and endless conversations, Jude Anthany Joseph decided to set a strict condition to move things forward. He firmly informed the Hindi movie makers that he would only proceed with completing and finalizing the screenplay if they officially confirmed Mohanlal’s casting for the pivotal role he had designed for him. According to the director, the production house casually responded via email, stating that they first needed to be fully convinced by the completed script, after which they would think about the secondary casting and secondary artists. This specific choice of words deeply offended the filmmaker, who immediately reached out to the production team for further clarification. When the producers confirmed that the dismissive term was indeed directed at Mohanlal, the filmmaker found it incredibly insulting and disrespectful to one of the finest and most respected actors in the history of Indian cinema. Believing strongly that such a legendary star did not deserve to be referred to as a mere secondary artist under any circumstances, Jude decided that he could no longer work with a team that held such a narrow and disrespectful perspective.
Following this bitter and disappointing exchange, the filmmaker firmly decided to withdraw from the promising Bollywood venture altogether, prioritizing respect over a big-ticket commercial opportunity. He shared that the production house accepted his decision without much resistance, prompting the matter to quickly escalate into formal legal territory. To ensure a clean, transparent, and professional exit from the commitment, Jude brought his legal team into the discussion and officially cancelled the agreement. He honorably returned the entire advance payment he had initially received for the project and successfully got the producers to sign a non-disclosure agreement to formally close the chapter once and for all. By choosing to walk away from a massive mainstream opportunity in the Hindi film industry to fiercely protect the dignity of a veteran actor, Jude Anthany Joseph has earned immense praise, admiration, and respect from fans across the internet. Meanwhile, the celebrated director is currently enjoying the theatrical release of his latest film Thudakkam, which importantly marks the acting debut of Mohanlal’s daughter, Vismaya Mohanlal, thereby beautifully continuing his strong and respectful professional bond with the legendary actor’s family.
