Jimmy Shergill Reflects On Satluj Row, Recalls Maachis’ Success Despite Similar Theme: ‘Politics Exists’

Versatile actor Jimmy Shergill recently shared his thoughts on why films depicting politically sensitive moments in history frequently encounter roadblocks, referencing the ongoing controversy around the Diljit Dosanjh starrer film Satluj. In a recent interview, the actor addressed questions comparing the recent OTT withdrawal of Satluj with the massive success of his 1996 debut film Maachis, both of which explored socio-political unrest and human struggles set against turbulent periods in Punjab. Shergill observed that political friction is an inevitable part of cinema dealing with sensitive historical realities, stating that politics exists and will always continue, but added that stirring up such complex topics serves a purpose by bringing hidden aspects and truths into the open for public awareness.
The controversy around Satluj escalated after the film, which depicts the life and work of human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra, was pulled down from the streaming platform ZEE5 within two days of its release, despite having previously faced over three years of censorship delays and numerous cuts from certification authorities. Drawing a clear contrast with his debut project Maachis, directed by legendary filmmaker Gulzar, Shergill pointed out that Maachis managed to achieve both commercial success and critical acclaim during its release, eventually earning two prestigious National Film Awards including Best Popular Film. He credited the enduring resonance of Maachis to the strong creative vision of the director and the authentic storytelling that connected deeply with audiences across generations.
Recalling his emotional journey while stepping into the film industry with Maachis, Shergill candidly revealed that he was an inexperienced newcomer from Delhi when he first read the script and was moved to tears by its intensity. He shared how Gulzar guided him through every step of the production process, asking him to grow out his hair and beard while insisting that he remain present on the set to closely observe how scenes were crafted. The actor fondly remembered feeling terrified before executing a crucial monologue scene, only for Gulzar to constantly reassure him of his capability and instill the confidence needed to perform. Reflecting on his overall career trajectory, Shergill emphasized that while storytelling on historical themes will always attract debate and political commentary, honest filmmaking continues to hold a significant place in Indian cinema.
