The coming-of-age short film Bobby Beauty Parlour has captured widespread attention across the Indian film fraternity, not only for its poignant storytelling but also for the unusual creative collaboration behind its presentation. Presented jointly by acclaimed auteurs Imtiaz Ali and Anurag Kashyap, the twenty-minute film explores the bittersweet nuances of female friendship, small-town aspirations, and the quiet heartbreak of growing apart. Set inside a local beauty salon in Noida on the hottest day of the year, the plot revolves around childhood best friends Eelu and Manu, played by Adrija Sinha and Parul Rana, as they spend their final hours together before life pulls them in different directions. In an exclusive conversation discussing the project’s inception, director Shashwat Dwivedi shared how the story took shape, what it meant to earn the trust of two legendary filmmakers, and how his personal and professional journey shaped this emotional narrative.
Reflecting on how the project originated, Shashwat revealed that the idea grew out of a creative collaboration with his co-writer Janhavi Asthana, who also served as the producer and cinematographer of the short film. Having previously worked together on Anurag Kashyap’s directorial feature Kennedy, the duo was eager to embark on an independent project. Janhavi approached Shashwat with a core concept centered around two female friends and an unpleasant male character, jokingly asking him to direct so he could balance the narrative perspective. Upon reading the draft, Shashwat recognized that the story stemmed from an intensely authentic place, prompting him to draw from his own memories of teenage uncertainty, shifting friendships, and societal expectations. By collaborating closely with actors Adrija Sinha and Parul Rana, the team built a deeply realistic dynamic that captures the claustrophobic yet comforting atmosphere of a small-town beauty parlour.
The association of Imtiaz Ali and Anurag Kashyap as presenters added significant weight to the independent short film, a gesture Shashwat described as surreal. During his film school days, Shashwat deeply studied Imtiaz Ali’s screenplays, admiring how the veteran director balances commercial appeal with philosophical depth and allows his characters the freedom to feel lost. Although Shashwat moved to Mumbai with a dream of working under Ali, destiny led him to join Anurag Kashyap’s team in 2021 as an assistant director and script supervisor. Working closely with Kashyap over the years provided him with hands-on filmmaking experience and a rock-solid support system, while Ali’s filmography continued to serve as an artistic beacon from afar.
The release of Bobby Beauty Parlour during Friendship Week on YouTube highlights the enduring real-world camaraderie among all artists involved. For Imtiaz Ali, the short film evoked nostalgic memories of his own youth in a small town, prompting him to praise its ability to capture delicate life moments that quietly shape human character forever. Meanwhile, Anurag Kashyap praised Shashwat’s evolution as a storyteller, noting that watching his growth from an assistant to an independent filmmaker felt deeply personal. With rave reviews celebrating its sensitive performances and nuanced portrayal of class divide and emotional loss, Bobby Beauty Parlour stands out as a memorable cinematic tribute to youth and changing relationships.
