Veteran actor Gajendra Chauhan, widely recognized for his iconic portrayal of Yudhishthir in BR Chopra’s legendary television series Mahabharat, has shared his candid thoughts regarding the newly released trailer of director Nitesh Tiwari’s epic feature film Ramayana. Speaking during a podcast interview, the seasoned actor admitted that he was personally not impressed by the initial promotional footage of the grand cinematic adaptation, citing concerns over visual realism, modern styling choices, and heavy dependence on computer-generated imagery. Elaborating on specific scenes from the trailer, Chauhan expressed disappointment with the portrayal of Kaikeyi played by Lara Dutta, noting that her modern saree styling and the overall execution of her dialogue demanding Lord Ram’s exile lacked the required emotional depth and traditional authenticity. Having previously played King Dashrath himself in a 2002 television rendition of Ramayan, he emphasized that the emotional confrontation between Kaikeyi and Dashrath forms the very soul of the epic narrative and required a more grounded, realistic direction rather than relying on modern visual aesthetics and heavy graphics.
Addressing the casting of Bollywood superstar Ranbir Kapoor in the lead role of Lord Ram, Gajendra Chauhan offered a balanced view that acknowledged both the visual presentation and the inherent challenges of casting established stars in mythological roles. While clarifying that Ranbir Kapoor looks remarkably good and convincing in his physical get-up as Lord Ram, Chauhan pointed out that massive star power often comes with a pre-existing public image that audiences already associate with past commercial roles. He explained that mythological adaptations traditionally perform best when actors do not carry heavy public image baggage, as viewers hold deeply rooted cultural and royal expectations for figures like Lord Ram. However, Chauhan noted that it remains unfair to pass a final judgment on the performance based solely on brief teaser clips, adding that audiences will only be able to evaluate the true impact of the portrayal once the full movie releases in theaters.
Despite his reservations about certain production choices, Gajendra Chauhan showered immense praise on the decision to cast veteran actor Arun Govil as King Dashrath, calling it the single best casting choice in the entire film. Arun Govil, who famously became a household name across India after playing Lord Ram in Ramanand Sagar’s classic 1980s TV series Ramayan, bringing a deep emotional symmetry to his new role as the royal father. Chauhan highlighted that after nearly four decades of being loved as Ram, watching Govil naturally transition into playing King Dashrath feels like a poetic growth that brings incredible dignity and credibility to Nitesh Tiwari’s star-studded project. Directed as a grand multi-part cinematic spectacle starring Ranbir Kapoor, Sai Pallavi, Yash, and Sunny Deol in major roles, Ramayana remains one of the most anticipated Indian cinematic events, with its first installment set to hit big screens globally during the festive season.
