Actor Jimmy Shergill has expressed deep gratitude for his experience portraying Wing Commander Birender Singh “Tony” Dhanoa in the web series Operation Safed Sagar. The series, which focuses on the heroic role played by the Indian Air Force during the 1999 Kargil War, has earned widespread acclaim for presenting military life in a grounded and realistic manner rather than relying on hypermasculine, chest-thumping tropes. Reflecting on his preparation for the project, Jimmy shared that meeting real-life Air Force veterans served as a powerful lesson in humility and grounded behavior. He noted that despite sacrificing so much for the nation and facing high-stakes situations in combat, these officers remain incredibly humble, calm, and simple in how they interact with others. Jimmy explained that the show’s creators passed down a direct brief to keep the portrayals authentic to real life, making the grounded approach a true reflection of the armed forces.
The actor also highlighted the emotional core of Operation Safed Sagar, pointing out that few productions dive so deeply into the psychological weight carried by military families. He noted that every time a pilot takes off, even for a routine sortie, there is a lingering thought about returning safely, placing an immense emotional burden on loved ones waiting at home. Having previously played an Air Force pilot in movies like Agnipankh and Dharti, Jimmy shared that returning to an air base brought back nostalgic memories while giving him the opportunity to work alongside a talented younger generation of co-stars like Abhay Verma, Mihir Ahuja, and Siddharth. For the actor, portraying real-life heroes who led historic squadrons during the Kargil conflict has been both a fulfilling creative challenge and a personal reminder of the power of quiet dignity.
