Bollywood icon Rani Mukerji has achieved a major milestone in her career after being awarded an Honorary Doctor of Letters (D.Litt.) by Australia’s La Trobe University. The prestigious honor was conferred upon the star during a special ceremony at Federation Square in Melbourne as part of the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM) 2026. With this recognition, Rani becomes only the second Indian film personality to receive La Trobe University’s highest accolade, following superstar Shah Rukh Khan, who was conferred with the same honor in 2019 for his contributions to cinema and philanthropy. The university recognized Rani’s nearly three-decade-long contribution to Indian cinema alongside her sustained humanitarian work and advocacy for women, children, and social causes.
The moment turned deeply emotional as the presenter recounted Rani’s artistic journey and social contributions on stage. Captured in a now-viral video from the event, the actress broke down in tears of joy while standing on the dais in her academic robes. Smiling through her tears, Rani gently wiped them away as she accepted the degree amidst loud applause from attendees. Reflecting on the humbling moment, the Mardaani star expressed her deep gratitude, sharing that when she entered the film industry as a teenager, she had no roadmap and simply wanted to make her family and country proud through her work. She highlighted that cinema has always been a powerful force to change hearts and connect cultures, accepting the honor on behalf of Indian cinema and artists worldwide.
La Trobe University Chancellor John Brumby praised Rani’s exceptional impact, stating that her memorable performances in acclaimed films like Black, No One Killed Jessica, Hichki, and Mrs Chatterjee vs Norway have consistently sparked vital conversations on equality, social justice, and women’s rights. Beyond her cinematic legacy, the recognition also celebrated her long-standing philanthropic efforts, including her work supporting neonatal healthcare at Mumbai’s Holy Family Hospital and associations with organizations like CRY and the Cancer Patients Aid Association. The emotional conferral ceremony stood out as one of the highlights of IFFM 2026, leaving fans and peers celebrating the star’s global recognition.
