Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap and his long-time partner Shubhra Shetty have candidly opened up about their relationship, addressing public scrutiny over their 20-year age gap, marriage plans, and initial insecurities. Appearing together in an interview with Janice Sequeira, the 53-year-old director and Shubhra, who is in her 30s, reflected on their 11-year journey together. Anurag confessed that as he grew older while Shubhra continued to look the same, he became extremely self-conscious about their age difference. The Gangs of Wasseypur director admitted that the hesitation and fear of judgment grew so strong at one point that he actively tried to push her away, insisting that she explore life on her own terms rather than feeling restricted or defined by their relationship. However, Shubhra was firm in her commitment, sharing that her family was supportive from the very beginning and noting lightheartedly that her mother is just a few years older than Anurag and shares a great friendship with him.
Addressing questions regarding their future and whether wedding bells are on the cards, Anurag clarified their joint stance on third-time marriage by revealing that Shubhra simply does not believe in the traditional institution of marriage. The director shared that he is completely content with their present bond and prioritizes staying healthy and being together over fulfilling societal formalities, emphasizing that as long as they retain their deep connection, he is happy with whatever form their relationship takes. During the emotional conversation, Shubhra also recalled a tender memory from their early dating phase when she casually mentioned that being in love was on her bucket list and she could happily die now, which moved Anurag to tears as he realized he had finally found something worth living for. The couple, who first met when Shubhra worked as an assistant director at Phantom Films, reiterated that mutual respect, shared love for cinema, and open communication continue to keep their bond strong despite external noise.
