The Partition-era period drama Batwara 1947, starring veteran actor Sunny Deol and directed by Rajkumar Santoshi, is finding it tough to maintain a strong grip at the box office as it faces heavy competition from Emraan Hashmi’s Awarapan 2. Released in theatres on August 14, 2026, coinciding with the extended Independence Day weekend, the film backed by Aamir Khan Productions opened to a modest ₹5.75 crore net in India before experiencing a massive surge on its second day with ₹13.50 crore. However, following a steep drop after the weekend, the film earned ₹2.25 crore net on its first Tuesday (Day 5), bringing its total domestic net collection to ₹30.75 crore and total India gross to ₹36.54 crore across nearly 6,600 screen shows. With international territories adding around ₹6.75 crore gross, the worldwide total for the film currently stands at ₹43.29 crore, leaving it struggling to cross the crucial ₹50 crore mark in the immediate future.
The modest performance comes as a stark contrast to Sunny Deol’s massive success earlier this year with Border 2, as Batwara 1947 continues to lose significant screen count and footfalls to the rival release Awarapan 2, which has already zoomed past the ₹100 crore domestic net mark. Based on Asghar Wajahat’s acclaimed play Jis Lahore Nai Dekhya, O Jamyai Nai, the emotional drama also features a star-studded cast including Preity Zinta, Shabana Azmi, Ali Fazal, Karan Deol, and Abhimanyu Singh. While the film has managed to comfortably outperform smaller early-2026 releases like Happy Patel and Ek Din, trade analysts note that its high production scale makes the slow weekday trend a growing concern as it battles to sustain theater occupancy over the remainder of the week.
