Acclaimed Bollywood filmmaker Anurag Kashyap and his partner Shubhra Shetty have once again captured media attention following a lighthearted and candid interview in which they shared insights into their long-standing relationship and family dynamics. Speaking in a recent interview, Shubhra opened up about her parents’ initial reaction to her dating the Gangs of Wasseypur director, who is over twenty years her senior. Shubhra hilariously revealed that her mother playfully refers to Kashyap as a “bakra” (scapegoat) and views him much like a “henpecked husband,” jokingly adding that her mother thinks he is silly enough to stick with Shubhra and simply dances to his partner’s tunes. She explained that she never had to go out of her way to convince her family about their relationship, as her parents met Kashyap directly, bonded well with him, and formed their own warm, humorous opinion of the filmmaker.
Adding to the humorous family rapport, Anurag Kashyap pointed out that Shubhra’s parents are only two to three years younger than him, allowing them to easily relate and interact like close friends rather than traditional in-laws. During the conversation, Shubhra also fondly recalled their very first meeting, which took place around the time of Kashyap’s film Bombay Velvet. She shared that she met him during a phase when he was extremely fit, happy, and constantly immersed in books and cinema, allowing them to build an instant personal connection over shared passions. Having previously worked as an assistant director at Phantom Films—a production house co-founded by Kashyap—Shubhra clarified that she never reported directly to him, ensuring their personal relationship developed naturally without workplace conflicts.
The couple, who have been together for several years, also addressed conversations surrounding their significant age gap and future plans. While Kashyap admitted to occasionally feeling self-conscious about their age difference in the past, he noted that online judgment no longer affects them. Furthermore, the director clarified that they have no immediate plans to tie the knot, as Shubhra does not personally subscribe to the formal institution of marriage, preferring instead to focus on their strong mutual respect, shared humor, and comfortable companionship.
