National Award-winning actress Taapsee Pannu is returning to the courtroom, this time for the upcoming investigative thriller titled Assi. Directed by Anubhav Sinha, the film’s trailer was released on February 4, 2026, offering a chilling glimpse into a narrative that promises to be both uncomfortable and essential.
A Powerful Return to Justice
In Assi, Taapsee Pannu portrays a relentless lawyer named Raavi, who takes on a brutal sexual assault case that has shaken the nation’s conscience. The title itself—meaning “Eighty”—serves as a grim reminder of a real-world statistic: the nearly 80 rape and sexual assault cases reported in India every single day.
The trailer highlights Raavi’s emotional yet fierce battle within the legal system, fighting for a survivor played by Kani Kusruti. Unlike a traditional legal drama, Assi explores the hurdles of bureaucracy, internalised misogyny, and the dark layers of a society that often chooses to look away from everyday crimes.
Collaborative Powerhouse
This film marks the third collaboration between Taapsee Pannu and director Anubhav Sinha, following their critically acclaimed work in Mulk (2018) and Thappad (2020). Known for his socially conscious storytelling, Sinha has described this project as a “loud thud” that aims to strike at the core of ignored realities.
The movie boasts a stellar ensemble cast, including Kani Kusruti (at the emotional center of the case), Revathy, Manoj Pahwa, Kumud Mishra, Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub and Special appearances by Naseeruddin Shah, Supriya Pathak, and Seema Pahwa.

Sharing her thoughts on the role, Taapsee Pannu stated that she felt it was time to bring these stories to light so that everyday crime news is never “normalized.” The film’s marketing campaign has been equally striking, featuring posters of Taapsee with black ink across her face and the haunting tagline: “Uss raat woh ghar nahi pahunchi” (That night, she didn’t reach home).
