In a recent conversation that has quickly gone viral, Bollywood star Varun Dhawan shared a gripping yet bizarrely humorous anecdote involving his father, veteran filmmaker David Dhawan. Speaking on the Be A Man, Yaar! podcast with Yuvaa, the actor opened up about a time when their household was targeted by the underworld—a period that turned into a comedy of errors thanks to a feisty staff member.
A Threat Met with a Challenge
During the late 90s and early 2000s, it wasn’t uncommon for high-profile film personalities to receive extortion calls. Varun recalled that while his family was indeed receiving these “scary” calls, they remained oblivious to the danger for quite some time. The reason? Their domestic staff was busy picking fights with the callers.
“Our staff was arguing with whoever was calling. They even gave out our full address and told the person, ‘Come meet me in that garden; I’ll beat you there,'” Varun shared with a laugh.
The situation only came to light when a fellow actor called David Dhawan to warn him that things had escalated. The caller had told the actor he was coming to the Dhawan residence with guns, specifically mentioning the staff member who had challenged him.
“Funny, but Not Really”
Varun described the moment his father realized the gravity of the situation. When David Dhawan asked who exactly had been communicating with the underworld, he was shocked to find out it was his own employee trying to initiate a street fight.

“Every time a scene is written, he thinks about how ‘Chichi Bhaiya’ (Govinda) would do it,” Varun explained. “I have to remind him that I need to find my own way to perform for my audience!”
