The Face of a New World: Why Mukesh Chhabra Chose Sara Arjun for ‘Dhurandhar’

In the high-stakes world of Bollywood casting, where big names often dictate the marquee, the selection of Sara Arjun for Aditya Dhar’s spy thriller Dhurandhar raised many eyebrows. In a recent candid discussion, ace casting director Mukesh Chhabra opened up about the intensive search that led to Sara’s casting as Yalina, the daughter of a Pakistani politician who becomes central to the film’s high-octane plot.

Searching for Authenticity
According to Chhabra, the production was flooded with requests from established leading ladies. “Aditya [Dhar] and I were constantly being messaged by several well-known actresses who wanted to be cast opposite Ranveer Singh,” Chhabra revealed. However, the vision for Dhurandhar required something that stardom couldn’t provide: a lack of “cinematic baggage.”

Chhabra explained that because Ranveer’s character travels to Pakistan and meets Yalina there, it was crucial for the audience to see a face that felt native to that world. “I told Aditya very clearly—we need a face that truly looks like she belongs to that place. If we used an actress who had already done two or three films with Ranveer, that connection wouldn’t be established,” he added.

The 1,300-Audition Marathon
The search for Yalina was anything but simple. Chhabra’s team reportedly conducted between 1,200 and 1,300 auditions to find the perfect match. While the industry was “craving a new face,” the role also demanded a high level of technical skill to match the intensity of the seasoned cast, which includes Akshaye Khanna, Sanjay Dutt, and Arjun Rampal.

Though Sara Arjun is not a stranger to the camera—having earned acclaim as a prolific child actor in films like Deiva Thirumagal and Ponniyin Selvan—Dhurandhar marks her transition into a full-fledged adult lead in a Hindi blockbuster.

“Even though she has been a child actor, we wanted a fresh approach,” Chhabra noted. “When she gave the audition, I saw the hidden talent behind her sweet face. She is an amazing actor, and the audience will see her depth in Part 2.”

A Massive Box Office Impact
The gamble on a “fresh face” appears to have paid off handsomely. Directed by Aditya Dhar and produced by Jio Studios, Dhurandhar has become a global phenomenon, reportedly crossing the ₹1,400 crore mark at the box office.

Critics and fans alike have noted that Sara’s portrayal of Yalina adds a layer of vulnerability and mystery that keeps the audience guessing about her true motivations. With the second installment already generating buzz, Chhabra’s “surprise casting” is being hailed as a masterstroke in a film that thrives on unpredictability.
