Before Ranveer Singh’s Don 3 exit, these Bollywood stars also quit or were replaced in high-profile films

The Indian film industry has been buzzing with intense speculation following the shocking news of Ranveer Singh’s sudden departure from the highly anticipated action franchise Don 3. Directed by Farhan Akhtar, the project has run into massive legal and financial hurdles after the Federation of Western India Cine Employees issued a strict non-cooperation directive against the actor over his abrupt exit just weeks before the international shooting schedule was set to begin. While this high-stakes fallout has taken the entertainment world by storm, sudden casting changes, creative disagreements, and unexpected replacements in massive blockbusters are certainly not new to the glitzy world of Bollywood. Over the years, several top-tier Indian celebrities have either voluntarily walked out of major cinematic projects or been actively replaced by producers at the absolute last minute due to a variety of professional and personal complications.

One of the most talked-about instances of a superstar walking away from a mega-budget project involved Salman Khan and filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali for their dream reunion project titled Inshallah. Decades after delivering their iconic romantic hit Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, the duo had officially partnered up for a grand romantic drama that also featured Alia Bhatt in the leading role. However, just as pre-production was peaking, heavy creative differences emerged regarding the script’s direction and character motivations, forcing the makers to permanently shelf the multi-crore film in 2019. Similarly, global icon Priyanka Chopra created massive headlines when she unexpectedly exited Ali Abbas Zafar’s big-budget period drama Bharat right before her scheduled shooting dates alongside Salman Khan. While initial speculations hinted at heavy professional rescheduling to shoot her other Hindi venture The Sky Is Pink, it was later revealed that she primarily opted out of the massive project to accommodate her lavish wedding festivities with international pop star Nick Jonas, leading to Katrina Kaif stepping in as the quick replacement.

The industry has also witnessed strict administrative decisions from production houses, as seen in the highly publicized ousting of Kartik Aaryan from Karan Johar’s modern romantic comedy Dostana 2. The young star had already completed nearly twenty days of active filming alongside co-star Janhvi Kapoor when Dharma Productions abruptly released an official statement announcing a complete recasting of the project due to unexpected scheduling conflicts and professional disagreements, later replacing the primary cast with actors like Janhvi Kapoor and Lakshya. In other instances, unexpected health emergencies have completely altered the fate of major biographical films. Actor Shraddha Kapoor was the definitive original choice to portray Indian badminton champion Saina Nehwal in her 2021 sports biopic and had even undergone months of rigorous athletic training to master the sport. Unfortunately, a sudden and severe diagnosis of dengue forced her to step away from the grueling physical demands of the film, leading to Parineeti Chopra stepping up to take over the titular role.

Looking further back into Bollywood history, even legendary actors like Aishwarya Rai have faced sudden replacements under incredibly dramatic circumstances. The former Miss World was originally filming opposite Shah Rukh Khan for the 2003 romantic drama Chalte Chalte when extreme real-life disruptions caused on the physical movie sets by her then-boyfriend Salman Khan forced the production unit to quickly replace her with Rani Mukerji to avoid further delays. Aishwarya later revealed in television interviews that she was similarly dropped from massive projects like Veer-Zaara without any formal explanation from the directors. Even iconic film debuts have been heavily altered by parental intervention and creative clashes, most notably when Kareena Kapoor Khan famously walked right out of her planned Bollywood debut Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai opposite Hrithik Roshan. Following intense creative disagreements between her mother Babita and director Rakesh Roshan regarding her role’s screen time, Kareena walked out of the project, paving the way for Ameesha Patel to step into the iconic role while Kareena made her debut in Refugee later that same year.
