The debate surrounding Bollywood’s deep-rooted star system and massive wealth disparity has taken center stage once again after a few sharp remarks from a seasoned industry professional. Veteran actor and theatre artist Lalit Parimoo, who became a household name across India for his iconic portrayal of the villainous scientist Dr. Jaikaal in the classic television superhero series Shaktimaan, recently shared some blunt perspectives on the current state of the Hindi film industry. During a candid conversation, the veteran actor openly criticized the reigning star system, labeling it a complete deception that harms both the moviegoing audience and exceptionally talented artists who are constantly overlooked. In his view, the industry’s obsession with chasing big names blocks genuine talent from progressing, prompting him to suggest a radical shift in how long established actors should be allowed to dominate the field.

In an unfiltered discussion, Lalit Parimoo revealed that he has always opposed the facade of the star system and previously tried to initiate a formal movement against it by proposing a unique policy to the Cine and TV Artists Association. He expressed a strong belief that Bollywood stars with fifty crore rupees in their bank account should retire, asserting firmly that they should not be given any more work once they achieve a secure level of financial abundance. Drawing a direct parallel to the professional corporate world, the actor explained that companies naturally retire individuals around fifty years of age to intentionally pave the way for a younger generation to step up and showcase their capabilities. He questioned why the entertainment industry fails to adopt a similar cycle, pointing out that a twenty-five-year-old actor could easily deliver incredible performances if given the identical platform and resources currently reserved for a select few.

Taking his argument a step further, the veteran artist questioned the logic behind paying massive sums to a single individual, asking why prominent stars like Akshay Kumar continue to receive fifty crore rupees for a single film project. He wondered aloud how much wealth one individual truly needs to accumulate and questioned why these actors continue to accept such massive paychecks instead of stepping aside to let fresh talent emerge. Parimoo noted that if the industry shifted its mindset, ten new stars of that caliber could easily be established, breaking the monopoly that currently exists. He also voiced heavy concern over the staggering economic gap within show business, highlighting the unfairness of a system where a top-tier lead earns fifty crore rupees while a dedicated character actor receives a mere fifty thousand rupees. He added that many of these underpaid individuals have dedicated over thirty years of their lives to theatre and television, often sacrificing marriage and personal comfort due to financial constraints, while the wider industry ignores the pay disparity to solely focus on chasing the next massive box office hit.
