The highly anticipated romantic drama Chand Mera Dil, starring the fresh on-screen pairing of Ananya Panday and Lakshya, has finally made its debut in theaters across the country. Backed by Karan Johar’s prominent banner Dharma Productions and directed by Vivek Soni, the film arrived with a fair share of curiosity surrounding its intense narrative and a dark, unexpected twist. However, the initial box office reports suggest that the movie has started its theatrical journey on a rather lukewarm note. According to early trade estimates, Chand Mera Dil managed to collect around 2.60 crore net at the domestic box office on its opening day. Despite running across nearly five thousand shows nationwide and benefiting from an aggressive early-bird pricing strategy where ticket rates were capped at an affordable 149 rupees for morning and afternoon shows, the film struggled to register high theater occupancy.
This slow opening is largely being attributed to the mixed-to-negative reception the movie received from both film critics and early viewers upon its release. The central plot follows the journey of characters named Chandni and Aarav, who fall in love during their college days in Hyderabad, face an unplanned pregnancy, and subsequently get married, only for their relationship to unravel under heavy pressure and a sudden moment of domestic violence. While this serious conflict has sparked intense conversations online, the overall execution failed to draw massive audiences to the theaters on Friday. When compared to Ananya Panday’s previous theatrical outing, a romantic comedy titled Tu Meri Main Tera Main Tera Tu Meri which scored a massive 7.75 crore opening day collection, Chand Mera Dil has underperformed significantly, failing to match that level of commercial momentum.
On the positive side, despite the sluggish start, Chand Mera Dil still managed to secure a minor victory by outperforming its immediate box office rival, Ek Din. The Junaid Khan and Sai Pallavi starrer romantic drama, which was produced by Aamir Khan and released just a week prior on May 15, had registered a very weak opening day haul of 1.15 crore nett. By crossing the two-crore mark on its debut, Lakshya and Ananya’s film successfully beat that benchmark, proving to be the preferred choice for moviegoers this weekend. Trade analysts note that while the first-day numbers are lower than expected for a major Dharma Productions venture, the ultimate fate of Chand Mera Dil now rests entirely on how well it holds up over the weekend. Since complex emotional dramas rely heavily on word-of-mouth publicity to grow, the next few days will determine whether the film can successfully bounce back or continue to struggle at the ticket windows.
