Chitrangada Singh Embraces a New Identity in Upcoming Film Maatrubhumi

In a industry where actors are often defined by their established screen personas, Chitrangada Singh is preparing to break the mold. The acclaimed actress recently opened up about her upcoming role in the high-stakes military drama Maatrubhumi: May War Rest In Peace, revealing a character that is a stark departure from anything she has tackled in her two-decade career.

Directed by Apoorva Lakhia and starring opposite Salman Khan, Maatrubhumi is inspired by the real-life events of the 2020 Galwan Valley conflict. While the film promises intense patriotic action, Chitrangada’s contribution lies in a deeply grounded, emotional performance that she describes as a refreshing “de-glamorized” shift.

A Departure from the Ordinary
For years, Chitrangada has been synonymous with the complex, urban, and fiercely independent women often found in the works of directors like Sudhir Mishra.

From the intellectually driven Geeta in Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi to the sharp college professor in Desi Boyz, her filmography is built on sophisticated roles. However, in Maatrubhumi, she steps into the shoes of a woman whose world revolves entirely around the domestic sphere.

“The brief was very clear from the start: they didn’t want me to look like ‘Chitrangada’ at all,” the actress shared in a recent interview. She explained that the production team worked meticulously on her physical transformation, focusing on simple hair and attire to strip away the “actor tools” she is typically known for.

The Heart of the Household
In the film, Singh portrays a devoted wife and mother—a character she describes as “soft, giving, and totally invested.” This woman lives by the philosophy that her home is her temple, providing the emotional backbone for a family caught in the shadow of military tension.

Chitrangada noted that the challenge wasn’t in the dialogue, but in the “being” of the character. “It was very nice to play someone so different from the women Sudhir Mishra would write. It required a different kind of energy—one that is rooted in quiet strength and unconditional love rather than external conflict,” she added.

Production and Anticipation
Produced under the banner of Salman Khan Films, Maatrubhumi has already generated significant buzz following its teaser release in late 2025. Originally titled Battle of Galwan, the film underwent a title change and is currently finalizing its release schedule. While initially slated for an April release, trade reports suggest the film is now eyeing an August 15, 2026, premiere to coincide with Independence Day.

The film features a star-studded crew, including a musical score by Himesh Reshammiya and tracks featuring vocalists Arijit Singh and Shreya Ghoshal. For Chitrangada, however, the true highlight remains the opportunity to showcase a side of herself that audiences have rarely seen—a simple woman navigating the extraordinary circumstances of war through the lens of family and sacrifice.
