Chunky Panday recalls when FWICE ‘banned’ him but couldn’t do the same to superstars Dharmendra, Shatrughan Sinha

In the wake of the massive controversy surrounding the Federation of Western India Cine Employees issuing a non-cooperation directive against Ranveer Singh over his sudden exit from the film Don 3, veteran Bollywood actor Chunky Panday has shared a fascinating page from his own past. During a recent interaction with the media, the actor revealed that he completely understands how it feels to be on the receiving end of such a strict industry directive, confessing that he was also banned by the federation during the very early days of his career. Chunky explained that while he had to face immediate disciplinary action and a temporary halt on his work, the federation simply could not apply the same strict rules to his senior co-stars, legendary screen icons Dharmendra and Shatrughan Sinha, who were also part of the exact same project. He noted that the entertainment industry has always functioned under a delicate balance of power, where a newcomer bears the maximum impact of organizational disputes while massive box-office superstars are frequently handled with a completely different level of leniency due to their extensive financial stakes.

Recalling the specific chain of events that took place way back in 1987, Chunky detailed how he accidentally landed in deep trouble with the federation during the production of the action film Aag Hi Aag. At that particular time, the entire Indian film industry had gone on a major, widespread strike, and all directors, actors, and crew members were strictly instructed to pause their work schedules completely to show solidarity. However, well-known producer Pahlaj Nihalani decided to bypass the strike guidelines entirely and proceeded to shoot the movie with his core cast, organizing outdoor schedules first in Bengaluru and subsequently moving the unit to Ooty. Chunky, who was a complete newcomer back then whose debut movie had not even made it to the theatres, naturally followed the instructions of his producer and continued filming alongside the rest of the team. As a direct consequence of this defiance, the federation initiated strict disciplinary proceedings against everyone involved in the production for violating the industry-wide strike protocol.

However, the enforcement of the punishment turned out to be highly uneven, highlighting the internal hierarchy that has historically governed the Hindi film business. Chunky explained that while he was slapped with an official one-week ban that completely restricted his ability to look for work or participate in shoots, his co-stars Dharmendra and Shatrughan Sinha remained completely untouched by the federation’s sudden disciplinary wrath. The actor humorously pointed out that both Dharmendra and Shatrughan Sinha were reigning cinematic giants of that era, each handling as many as thirty to forty film projects simultaneously, which meant that trying to place a ban on them would have disrupted half of Bollywood and caused an unimaginable financial catastrophe for dozens of innocent producers. Because the federation simply could not afford to take action against the biggest stars of the country, they decided to make an example out of the newcomer instead. Chunky admitted that the reason for his ban was simple since he was a defenseless target, though he eventually managed to resolve the entire matter peacefully by offering a formal apology, which led to the restriction being lifted within a week.

While Chunky firmly declined to make any direct comments or pass a personal judgment on the current high-profile legal battle between Ranveer Singh and filmmaker Farhan Akhtar, stating that he does not possess full knowledge of the core details, he emphasized that the film world remains a highly sensitive and fragile ecosystem. The actor reflected on how power dynamics have always influenced organizational decisions in showbiz, adding that his own historical experience serves as a reminder of how vulnerable young artists can be when trapped between powerful producers and dominant industry unions. Today, as netizens and trade analysts continue to debate the fairness of the federation’s modern directives, Chunky’s candid recollection has provided film enthusiasts with an insightful look into how the rules of the industry have always adapted differently depending on an actor’s commercial stature and stardom.
