David Dhawan Reveals Why a Shah Rukh Khan Collaboration Never Materialized: “We Were Planning to Do Something But…”

In the world of Bollywood few directors have defined the “masala” comedy genre as distinctively as David Dhawan. Having directed over 45 films and collaborated with nearly every major superstar—from Salman Khan and Govinda to Amitabh Bachchan—one notable name has always been missing from his filmography: Shah Rukh Khan.

As Dhawan prepares for the release of his next film Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai.he has finally cleared the air on why the “King of Romance” and the “King of Comedy” never teamed up.

During a recent promotional interview Dhawan was asked if there was ever a deliberate reason for not working with Shah Rukh Khan. The veteran filmmaker dismissed any rumors of a rift attributing the missed opportunity entirely to scheduling conflicts and his own prolific output during the 90s and early 2000s.

“It’s not like that. There was actually a time when we were planning to do something together” Dhawan revealed. “But I was always busy. At that stage of my career I constantly had two films on the floors at the same time. It became very difficult to align our dates.”

Dhawan explained that during his peak his filming style was incredibly fast-paced often wrapping up multiple projects in a single year. Shah Rukh Khan meanwhile was equally occupied with massive romantic epics and global tours making a 48-hour or even a 48-day window for a joint project nearly impossible to find.

While the collaboration never made it to the big screen industry insiders have often pointed to specific projects that were almost theirs. Reports suggest that Shah Rukh Khan was once considered for a role in the 1997 hit Deewana Mastana and there were even talks of a multi-starrer comedy titled Kis Kisko Pyaar Karu that would have featured Khan alongside several leading ladies of the era.

Dhawan noted that his collaborations with actors like Govinda and Salman Khan happened organically because their working styles and availability mirrored his own at the time. “I never decided that I would only work with specific actors. It just worked out that way with Govinda and Salman” he added.

Despite never having shared a film set Dhawan expressed immense respect for Shah Rukh Khan’s craft. He noted that while their creative spaces were often different—one leaning toward slapstick comedy and the other toward intense romance—the mutual interest was always present.

When asked if a collaboration could still happen in 2026 Dhawan remained optimistic but grounded. “Every collaboration depends on the right script and the right timing” he said. “If something comes up that suits both of us why not?”

For now Dhawan is focused on his upcoming romantic comedy starring his son Varun Dhawan alongside Mrunal Thakur and Pooja Hegde scheduled for release on May 22 2026. While the “Dhawan-SRK” film remains one of Bollywood’s greatest “what ifs” fans continue to wonder what kind of magic the duo might have created had those 90s schedules finally aligned. To know
