Filmmaker Vishal Chaturvedi recently opened up about the incredible series of challenges and unexpected turns he faced before rolling the cameras for his blockbuster devotional film Hanuman Ansh. Inspired by the teachings and life experiences surrounding Neem Karoli Baba, the project initially seemed nearly impossible to pull off, as a series of financial and logistical setbacks threatened to crush it before production even began. Early on, major financial backers unexpectedly pulled out, drastically slashing the project’s budget down to just 60 percent of what was originally planned. Unwilling to abandon the vision, Chaturvedi completely waived his own directing fees, reworked the logistics to travel by local trains instead of flights, and secured backing from producers Namrata Singh, Ragini Sona, and Anupriya Nagar to keep the dream alive.
The pre-production phase was further plagued by constant team departures, with several key crew members quitting due to the tight budget constraints. Just three days before the shoot was scheduled to start in Chitrakoot, the original costume designer resigned, leaving the crew in total disarray. Miraculously, replacement team members who walked into the project—including costume designer Upasana Singh—turned out to be devout believers of Neem Karoli Baba, stepping up to work tirelessly under difficult circumstances. The biggest blow came just twenty-four hours before filming was set to begin, when the original lead actor fell severely ill with a suspected relapse of Hepatitis B after vomiting over forty times, forcing him to exit the movie immediately. Facing an imminent production delay with the entire crew already on set in Chitrakoot, Chaturvedi turned to his assistant director, Shobinaw Satya, convincing him to step up and play the pivotal role of Neem Karoli Baba at the eleventh hour.
Throughout the intense pre-production phase and shoot, Chaturvedi maintained a deeply disciplined spiritual environment for everyone involved. The director mandated that the entire set remain strictly vegetarian, completely prohibited alcohol consumption, and required the lead actors to daily write pages of Ram Naam as part of their preparation. Chaturvedi himself lived exclusively on a strict fruit diet for over four months until the film’s post-release period. Despite the early rejections from streaming platforms and industry naysayers, this unwavering faith and raw determination eventually propelled Hanuman Ansh to transform from a struggling low-budget project into a massive, historic box-office phenomenon.
