In a recent candid conversation, Bollywood superstar Akshay Kumar shared a deeply personal and harrowing story from his infancy that his family has long regarded as a miracle. The actor, currently gearing up for his upcoming project Bhoot Bangla, opened up about a 1969 pilgrimage to the Vaishno Devi shrine that nearly turned into a family tragedy.
According to Kumar, his connection to the shrine began even before his birth. His parents had visited the holy site to pray specifically for a child, jokingly asking for a “naughty” son. When Kumar was born a year later, his parents viewed it as a direct blessing and planned a thanksgiving trip to the shrine shortly after his first birthday.
However, the journey quickly took a dark turn. While traveling toward Katra, the infant Akshay’s health began to deteriorate rapidly. The actor revealed that he was struck by an extremely high fever, which climbed to 104°F. As the family struggled to find medical help in the remote terrain, the situation became critical: the young Akshay fell completely unconscious.
“The doctor in Katra at the time advised my parents to rush me back to Delhi immediately,” Kumar shared during an interview with HT City. “In 1969, medical facilities in the area were very limited, and the situation looked bleak. I was unconscious and unresponsive.”
Faced with the terrifying choice of turning back for medical help or continuing the climb, Kumar’s mother made a decision rooted in unwavering faith. She reportedly told his father that if the Goddess had gifted them this child, she could protect him—or take him back—at her shrine. Refusing to turn around, the couple carried their unconscious son up the steep mountain path, constantly chanting “Jai Mata Di.”
Kumar recounted a vivid detail his parents often shared with him: he was dressed in a small red frock for the occasion, a garment he still keeps as a memento today.
The climax of the story occurred at the main shrine. After reaching the top, his parents bathed the child and offered emotional prayers, fearing the worst. While inside the temple, a stranger reportedly approached Kumar’s father and remarked on how beautiful the child’s smile was. When his father looked down, he was shocked to find that the baby was not only awake but smiling.
“By the time they checked, my temperature had dropped from 104°F to a perfectly normal 98°F,” Kumar said. “I’m not sure what medicine or logic explains it, but there was an energy there that seemed to heal me on its own.”
The actor noted that while he is often pragmatic about life, this specific incident remains a cornerstone of his family’s history. This revelation comes at a time when the actor has been reflective about his past, even as he continues to be one of the most prolific figures in the Indian film industry.
While the medical community often attributes such recoveries to natural fever breaks or late-acting medication, for the Kumar family, the recovery remains a testament to the power of faith and the “miraculous” energy of the Vaishno Devi hills. To
