In a hilarious yet fascinating revelation, filmmaker Farhan Akhtar and superstar Aamir Khan recently looked back at an iconic moment from their classic cult movie Dil Chahta Hai. During a special cast reunion, the team recalled shooting the crucial fallout scene where Akshaye Khanna’s character Sid slaps Aamir Khan’s character Aakash following a bitter argument about love. To the surprise of many, Farhan revealed that the slap was completely un-staged and real, leading to Akshaye slapping Aamir a whopping 17 times across different camera angles and takes. To make the initial impact look completely natural, Farhan secretly instructed Akshaye to throw the slap mid-sentence rather than at the end of the line, catching Aamir totally off guard for maximum surprise. However, after experiencing the emotional impact of the first real hit, Aamir himself insisted on getting slapped for every single subsequent take, including close-ups and over-the-shoulder shots, to stay locked in the right frame of mind.
By the time the crew wrapped up the shoot, the sheer dedication to physical realism left a clear mark on the actor’s face, with Farhan remembering that one side of Aamir’s face was visibly red and swollen. Explaining why he chose a single slap over a physical fight scene, Farhan shared that among close friends, a slap carries far more emotional weight, humiliation, and lasting impact than any standard violent altercation. Aamir echoed the sentiment, noting that the sheer intensity of being slapped genuinely fueled his character’s pride and anger, making the emotional distance between the two friends feel completely justified on screen. Joining the fun discussion, actress Suchitra Pillai also recalled her own scene where she had to slap Saif Ali Khan three times for real, proving that the classic 2001 friendship drama relied heavily on authentic performances to create cinema history.
