The Indian film industry is mourning the tragic loss of veteran filmmaker Kuku Kohli, who passed away at the age of 77 in Mumbai. He was widely celebrated for launching superstar Ajay Devgn in the iconic 1991 action-drama Phool Aur Kaante. His close friend and filmmaker Ashoke Pandit confirmed the heartbreaking news, revealing that Kuku Kohli suffered a massive heart attack. He explained that Kohli was feeling uncomfortable and was admitted to Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital, where he unfortunately collapsed due to cardiac failure despite receiving prompt medical care. Pandit added that Kohli was physically fit, physically active, and led a healthy lifestyle, making his sudden departure a massive shock to his family, friends, and colleagues across Bollywood.
Kuku Kohli, whose real name was Avtar Kohli, built a rich cinematic legacy spanning several decades. He learned the nuances of filmmaking by assisting legendary director Raj Kapoor on classics like Bobby, Satyam Shivam Sundaram, and Prem Rog, before working on hit films like Betaab and Arjun. He made his directorial debut with Phool Aur Kaante, which became an enormous box office success and immortalized Ajay Devgn’s legendary two-bike entry sequence. Over the years, Kohli delivered several memorable blockbusters including Suhaag, Haqeeqat, Anari No. 1, Zulmi, and Yeh Dil Aashiqanaa, working with top stars like Akshay Kumar, Dharmendra, and Govinda. Beyond his directorial work, he was an active industry leader who served as the General Secretary of IFTDA and contributed heavily to social welfare causes.
The veteran director is survived by his wife, renowned actress Aruna Irani, and his two daughters, producer Pooja Kohli and filmmaker Karishma Kohli, from his previous marriage.
