For the first time in its 72-year history, the prestigious National Film Awards ceremony is moving out of the national capital, marking an unprecedented milestone in the history of Indian cinema.

The upcoming 72nd National Film Awards ceremony will take place on September 22 at Kevadia, now officially known as Ekta Nagar, located in the state of Gujarat. Since the inception of these national honors back in 1954, Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi has served as the permanent traditional venue where the country’s finest cinematic talents have been celebrated.

Shifting this grand event to the scenic backdrop of the Statue of Unity, which stands as the tallest statue in the world dedicated to visionary statesman Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, represents a major cultural shift aimed at decentralized celebration of national artistic achievements. President Droupadi Murmu will personally preside over the grand gathering to confer the honored awards upon all the recognized artists and cinematic pioneers during the official ceremony on September 22.

The highly anticipated gathering in Ekta Nagar is set to welcome a stellar lineup of iconic actors, creative directors, producers, and talented technical crew members from across India’s vibrant regional film industries.

Among the highlight honors announced for the evening, the critically acclaimed political thriller Article 370 secured the title for Best Feature Film, with lead actress Yami Gautam earning the Best Actress accolade for her intense role. The Best Actor award will be jointly received by acclaimed Malayalam veteran Mammootty for his compelling portrayal in Bramayugam and Bollywood actor Kartik Aaryan for his dedicated physical transformation in Chandu Champion.

Furthermore, actor and director Randeep Hooda is set to receive the Best Debut Director award for his biographical drama Swatantrya Veer Savarkar. The grand event will also celebrate big-budget spectacles, with the blockbuster Telugu film Kalki 2898 AD receiving the award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment, and the Dhanush-led period action film Captain Miller earning recognition as the Best Feature Film Promoting National, Social, and Environmental Values.

Beyond individual accolades, this landmark edition of the National Film Awards underscores the government’s intent to bring monumental national events closer to landmark destinations across India, blending cinematic excellence with regional tourism and national heritage.

Film fraternity members, industry delegates, and high-profile dignitaries are expected to arrive in Gujarat days ahead of the main event to participate in preliminary showcase screenings and cultural programs celebrating the unity of Indian artistic expression. As final preparations near completion at Ekta Nagar, fans across the nation eagerly await the historic evening when the celebrated artists step onto the stage to receive their honors directly from the President.
