The boundaries between reel and real life are blurring for Simala Prasad, a distinguished 2011 batch IPS officer who is set to take on a lead role in the upcoming crime drama, The Narmada Story. Currently serving as the Deputy Inspector General of Police (Women’s Safety) in Bhopal, Prasad is no stranger to the lens, having previously appeared in films like Alif and Nakkash. In this new venture directed by Zaigham Imam, she steps into the shoes of Sub-Inspector Narmada Raikwar, a character inspired by true events. Despite her high-ranking position in the Indian Police Service, Prasad chose to play a junior officer to better understand and portray the specific professional and social challenges faced by those at the grassroots level of the police force. She believes that while her work as a police officer is often confined to her immediate area of posting, cinema offers a vast platform to broadcast powerful social messages and potential solutions to a national audience.

Prasad’s journey to the silver screen is as unconventional as her career in the civil services. A gold medalist from Barkatullah University, she famously cracked the UPSC examination in her very first attempt without any coaching, securing an impressive All India Rank of 51. Her transition into acting was not a planned career shift but rather a natural extension of her lifelong interest in theatre and literature, influenced heavily by her mother, Padma Shri awardee and renowned writer Mehrunnisa Parvez. For Prasad, engaging with the arts is a way to explore the multifaceted nature of human personality. She advocates that individuals should never compartmentalize themselves into a single professional framework but should instead actively cultivate their hobbies. Whether it is through her non-fiction book She Goes Missing or her online acting workshops, she emphasizes that having a clear objective allows one to explore different mediums of expression without compromising on primary responsibilities.

The Narmada Story aims to move away from the “masala” tropes of typical Bollywood cop dramas, focusing instead on a raw and realistic portrayal of police life, particularly the experiences of women within the department. Shot on location in Narmadapuram, Madhya Pradesh, the film features an ensemble of veteran actors including Raghubir Yadav and Mukesh Tiwari. Prasad sees her involvement in such meaningful cinema as an extension of her duty to help people and drive systemic change. By portraying a cop who fights for justice on screen, she hopes to empower viewers and send a strong, positive message to society. She continues to maintain a rigorous balance between her demanding administrative duties and her creative pursuits, proving that with dedication, it is possible to serve the public through both the enforcement of law and the powerful medium of storytelling.
