Jyotika backs Deepika Padukone, compares work hours in South cinema and Bollywood: ‘They pack up at 6’

The ongoing conversation around healthy working conditions and professional boundaries in the Indian film industry has found a strong new voice in veteran actress Jyotika. During a promotional event for her upcoming courtroom drama series System, Jyotika stood firmly in support of Bollywood superstar Deepika Padukone, who recently sparked an industry-wide debate by reportedly demanding structured eight-hour shifts for her film assignments. Addressing the media alongside her co-star Sonakshi Sinha, Jyotika openly discussed the stark differences in work culture between Hindi cinema and the South Indian film industry. She highlighted that demanding a shorter, healthier shift should not be treated as an unusual or problematic request for an actor, especially when other regional industries have been successfully implementing balanced schedules for decades without compromising on the quality of their cinematic output.

Reflecting on her extensive experience working down South, Jyotika pointed out that she never found herself in a position where she had to separately negotiate or beg for an eight-hour workday because the regional industry naturally operates on an incredibly disciplined timetable. She shared that for nearly ninety-nine percent of the movies shot in the South, the crew completely packs up the sets by six in the evening. The daily routines are highly streamlined, with shoots commencing early in the morning and running strictly from seven to six or nine to six. Jyotika emphasized that this structured approach allows everyone, from the leading stars to the daily-wage crew members, to wrap up their day at a reasonable hour, ensuring they have ample time to rest, recover, and maintain a functional personal life outside of the movie sets.

The discussion also touched upon the inherent double standards that female actors face when setting personal and professional boundaries regarding their time. Sonakshi Sinha strongly backed Jyotika’s observations, questioning why society and media houses even debate a woman’s request for reasonable working hours when countless top male actors routinely walk off sets the exact moment their standard eight-hour shift concludes without anyone batting an eye. Both actresses agreed that Deepika Padukone, who recently became a mother, deserves these manageable hours now more than ever to effectively balance her demanding career with childcare and family responsibilities. By shedding light on the efficient early wrap-ups in the South, Jyotika has added crucial depth to the conversation, demonstrating that film production can remain highly lucrative and prolific while still respecting the physical and mental well-being of its workforce.
