Actor-turned-director Kunal Kemmu recently shared a fascinating behind-the-scenes story regarding his upcoming directorial project, Vibe. Following the success of his directorial debut Madgaon Express, Kemmu is returning to the director’s chair for a full-throttle comedy-drama while also taking on multiple responsibilities as the writer, producer, and main lead.
During the trailer launch event in Mumbai, the filmmaker opened up about casting his iconic mother-in-law, veteran cinema icon Sharmila Tagore, for a cameo appearance. While many assumed that casting a legendary actress in a modern project would require a lengthy pitch process, Kemmu revealed that the initial impulse actually originated from Sharmila Tagore herself.
The narrative took a charming turn when his wife, actor Soha Ali Khan, initially passed along a message from her mother. Sharmila Tagore, whom Kemmu affectionately addresses as Amma, expressed genuine interest in appearing in his second directorial effort.
Initially treating it as a lighthearted conversation, Kunal took a shot in the dark and personally reached out to her to confirm if she was serious about joining the project. Upon reaching out, the veteran actress playfully requested a complete narrative synopsis of the film. After reviewing the script details, she jokingly confessed that asking for the synopsis was merely a trick question and that she had already made up her mind to say yes to the cameo appearance.
Directing an actor of Sharmila Tagore’s stature comes with immense artistic pressure, given her legendary filmography and iconic collaborations with world-renowned filmmakers like Satyajit Ray and Hrishikesh Mukherjee. Kemmu admitted to feeling a sense of nervous excitement on set, yet he described the experience as achieving a major personal milestone that he never imagined would come true.
Calling “action” and “cut” for a cinema titan proved to be a deeply rewarding experience for the director, especially as the film marks Tagore’s long-awaited return to the Hindi theatrical screen after sixteen years.
The upcoming movie Vibe promises to deliver high-energy entertainment, featuring a stellar ensemble cast alongside Sharmila Tagore’s special appearance.
The film stars Kunal Kemmu in the lead alongside Preity Zinta, Sparsh Shrivastava, Vanshika Dhir, Yashpal Sharma, and Bhojpuri star Dinesh Lal Yadav. Produced under Drongo Films in collaboration with Chirag Nihalani, the story follows a chaotic spy mission filled with comedic twists and unexpected turns. As the theatrical release date of September 18 approaches, excitement continues to build among audiences eager to witness this unique cross-generational cinematic collaboration.
