Renowned actor and filmmaker R Madhavan recently opened up about his family’s major decision to relocate to Dubai a few years ago. In a candid conversation, the veteran actor revealed that the choice to leave India was driven entirely by his wife, Sarita Birje, who took a timely step to protect their son Vedaant’s rising career in competitive swimming.
The family relocated during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic when strict lockdown restrictions were placed on public facilities across India. While the country was dealing with extended closures, swimming pools in Mumbai and other major cities remained completely shut. For Vedaant, who was going through a crucial teenage growth spurt at the time, this prolonged lack of access to training facilities threatened to derail his athletic progress permanently.
Reflecting on that high-pressure period, Madhavan expressed how stressed he and his wife were about their son’s athletic future. While India kept facilities closed to prevent the spread of the virus, global sporting nations like China, France, and Germany had quickly reopened their Olympic-sized pools under strict bio-bubbles. Athletes in those countries were breaking world records despite the pandemic, leaving young Indian competitors at a massive disadvantage.
When the family discovered that training centres in Dubai were opening up under highly monitored, safe conditions, Sarita decided that they could not afford to wait around. According to Madhavan, his wife simply packed up and left for the United Arab Emirates with their son to resume his routine. The actor followed them shortly after.
Madhavan highly credited his wife’s quick intuition, stating that the move came at the exact minute it was required. Had they stayed back in Mumbai, the lack of continuous training during those defining teenage years could have easily brought an early end to Vedaant’s dreams of representing India on international platforms. The decision proved highly successful, as the Indian national swimming contingent also ended up using Dubai as a training hub during that period.
The risk taken by the family clearly yielded positive results. Today, Vedaant Madhavan is recognized as one of India’s most promising young freestyle swimmers, having secured multiple gold and silver medals at prestigious events like the Danish Open, the Malaysian Open, and the Junior National Aquatics Championships.
Despite his son’s rising profile in the sporting world, Madhavan remains incredibly realistic about his own role as a father, humbly rating himself a six out of ten. He admitted that his demanding filming schedules often keep him from being as physically present as he would like to be, leaving Sarita to handle the heavy lifting of day-to-day parenting. Madhavan described his own parenting style as focusing more on providing emotional guidance and broad life philosophy.
The actor also shared his deep-seated anxiety regarding the massive public attention his son receives. He acknowledged that because Vedaant is a celebrity’s child, his achievements often get a disproportionately larger spotlight compared to fellow athletes who might be performing at similar or higher levels.
