Obsession with Cannes is only to walk the red carpet, says Anurag Kashyap on Indian celebs attending the festival

Renowned filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has expressed his strong discontent with how Indian celebrities and the media perceive the prestigious Cannes Film Festival. In a recent candid interview, the director raised concerns about the country’s growing fixation on fashion over film, pointing out that the true essence of cinema is being entirely lost in the glamour. Kashyap stated that the problem and obsession with Cannes back home is strictly limited to walking the red carpet, as most people fail to understand that a massive cinematic celebration exists far beyond the cameras and outfits. While Indian stars like Alia Bhatt, Tara Sutaria, and Urvashi Rautela have been making waves internationally with their elaborate ensembles at recent galas, the director lamented that the actual purpose of the film festival is being largely overshadowed by vanity.

Reflecting on his own experiences at the French Riviera, the director mentioned that the red carpet is actually the least important element of the entire festival, emphasizing that the primary focus should always remain on the films. Kashyap playfully noted his own low-profile approach, explaining that he and his peers often bypass the main media lines entirely to enter screenings from the side gates. He further elaborated that many of the Indian professionals who travel to Cannes for the film market or to visit the Indian Pavilion rarely step inside a theater to watch anything. He expressed genuine disappointment over how sparse the Indian attendance is during the actual screenings, sharing that it is incredibly rare to spot representatives from India engaging with the international titles on display.

The director also pointed out a broader systemic issue within the Indian film industry, including a persistent wave of misinformation and a general hesitation among domestic producers when it comes to dealing with prestigious international festivals. He explained that Indian filmmakers are rarely on time with their submissions and often face unnecessary delays, which ultimately costs them a fair shot at getting their work selected in major competitive categories. Kashyap highlighted that while Indian celebrities flood social media with red-carpet photos, the representation of actual Indian cinema remains incredibly minimal. Turning the focus back to why he traveled to the festival this year despite not having a project to showcase, the director confessed to feeling creatively stuck and exhausted by the current state of filmmaking, particularly with the rapid rise of artificial intelligence and shifting industry dynamics. He shared that touring festivals and watching the rule-breaking work of fresh, debutant global filmmakers is his personal way of finding inspiration and discovering a path forward.
