Bollywood actress and entrepreneur Preity Zinta has taken a strong legal stand against the misuse of technology by approaching the Bombay High Court to protect her personality rights. The actress filed a comprehensive civil suit against major tech giants, including Google LLC, Meta Platforms Inc., X Corp, and several digital entities, over the unauthorized creation and widespread circulation of artificial intelligence-generated deepfake videos, altered digital media, memes, and interactive chatbot personas.
Represented by senior advocate Venkatesh Dhond, Preity Zinta’s legal team argued before Justice Madhav Jamdar that these sophisticated AI fabrications use her distinct face, voice, trademark smile, and likeness without her consent, severely damaging her hard-earned brand value, market goodwill, and violating her fundamental right to privacy.
The legal battle escalated as Preity Zinta’s counsel pushed for immediate action to tackle the growing menace of digital manipulation. Her legal team highlighted that these highly realistic deepfakes are spreading globally and locally, making it crucial for the court to grant urgent ex-parte directions and “John Doe” orders against unidentified online infringers.
The suit explicitly points out that various unauthorized domain names using her identity have been registered, further exploiting her identity for commercial gain. During the proceedings, the counsel representing tech giants like Google and Meta stated they had no objection to removing specific, identified URLs containing obscene or morphed material but opposed any blanket directives that would force them to proactively monitor all content.
Recognizing the complexity of balancing copyright protection with legitimate online content, Justice Madhav Jamdar directed all parties to collaboratively design a practical mechanism or protocol to smoothly take down the infringing links without disrupting lawful media, posting the matter for orders.
With this significant move, Preity Zinta joins an expanding list of prominent Indian celebrities who have approached the judiciary to shield their digital identities from the darker side of artificial intelligence. Over the last two years, the Bombay High Court has granted similar protective relief to major industry figures like Akshay Kumar, Kartik Aaryan, Shilpa Shetty, and Suniel Shetty to safeguard their publicity rights.
This case emphasizes the urgent need for robust compliance frameworks under evolving technological rules, highlighting how unauthorized synthetic media can pose a serious threat to a celebrity’s professional reputation and personal peace. As the legal system steps up to define the boundaries of digital identity theft, the outcome of this lawsuit could set a powerful precedent for how global social media platforms handle deepfakes in the modern entertainment era.
