R. Madhavan Breaks Silence on ‘Dhurandhar 2’ Smoking Row: “No Disrespect Intended”

Following a wave of backlash and a formal police complaint from the Sikh community, actor R. Madhavan has issued a detailed clarification regarding a controversial scene in his latest film, Dhurandhar 2: The Revenge.

The controversy erupted earlier this week when viewers and religious organizations pointed out a sequence where Madhavan’s character, Ajay Sanyal, appears to be smoking while reciting sacred verses from the Dasam Granth, authored by Guru Gobind Singh Ji. The Sikh community in Maharashtra, led by Gurjyot Singh Keer, filed an FIR at the Mulund Police Station, alleging that the depiction was “deeply hurtful” and “insensitive” to their faith.

“A Misunderstanding,” Says Madhavan
Taking to Instagram to address the growing friction, Madhavan shared a video message to clear the air. He emphasized that both he and director Aditya Dhar were extremely mindful of the scene’s sensitivity and took specific precautions to ensure no religious sentiments were harmed.

“There is a slight misunderstanding. I am certain that during this scene, before delivering these lines, Aditya Dhar—who is even more careful about these things than I am—clearly told me to put out the cigarette well in advance,” Madhavan explained in his video.

The actor further broke down the technicalities of the shot to reassure the public:
The Extinguishment: Madhavan stated that the cigarette was properly put out before the recitation began.
No Smoke on Screen: He pointed out that if viewers watch the scene closely, there is no smoke coming from his mouth or visible anywhere in the frame while the sacred lines are being spoken.

No Physical Contact: He clarified that he was not holding a cigarette during the delivery of the verses, as the team viewed the text as “sacred and pure.”

Deep Respect for Sikh Traditions
In an effort to bridge the gap with his audience, Madhavan reiterated his personal connection and respect for the Sikh community. He mentioned that it is his long-standing tradition to visit the Golden Temple in Amritsar before the release of every film.

“We stand with the entire Sikh community and always will. We have deep respect for them,” he added, noting that any offense caused was purely unintentional. He concluded his message with a sincere apology to anyone whose feelings were hurt, urging fans to trust the team’s intent.

The Controversy Background
The scene in question features a dialogue between Madhavan and Ranveer Singh’s character, where a verse about the warrior spirit of Sikhs is recited. The primary grievance from the Sikh community was the perceived juxtaposition of tobacco—which is strictly prohibited in Sikhism—with Gurbani.

While the film continues to perform strongly at the box office, the makers are now navigating the legal and social fallout of the complaint. As of now, the film’s team has not confirmed if any edits will be made to the theatrical version of the scene. To
