In a major legal update for Bollywood fans, popular actor Rajpal Yadav has received temporary interim relief from the Supreme Court of India regarding his ongoing seven cheque bounce cases.

The apex court bench, headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, reviewed the petition filed by the actor and his wife challenging a previous conviction order. While granting Yadav a final two-week window to demonstrate his bona fides, the court directed him to deposit a demand draft of 2 crore rupees with the Supreme Court registry and explicitly instructed him to surrender his passport immediately.

During the proceedings, the bench made sharp oral observations regarding his past conduct, noting that his commitments had repeatedly failed to inspire confidence and remarking that while he acts exceptionally well in films, he must strictly honor his legal obligations without further drama.

The complex financial dispute traces back to 2010 when Rajpal Yadav borrowed approximately 5 crore rupees from a Delhi-based firm, Murli Projects Private Limited, to fund his directorial debut film titled Ata Pata Laapata.

Following the film’s poor performance at the box office, the actor struggled to settle the debt, leading to seven issued cheques bouncing upon presentation in 2013. Over the years, accrued interest and additional penalties pushed the total outstanding liability close to 9 crore rupees.

Earlier, the Delhi High Court had upheld his conviction, sentencing him to three months of imprisonment in each of the seven cases and directing him to pay over 1 crore rupees per case in compensation.

Seeking protection against immediate surrender, Yadav approached the Supreme Court, where his defense counsel requested breathing time and assured the court that the required funds would be arranged.

By extending his protection from surrender until the next scheduled hearing on October 5, the Supreme Court has made it clear that this strictly serves as his final opportunity to present a concrete repayment plan to the complainant.

The legal team representing the complainant emphasized that their primary focus remains recovering the long-pending financial dues that have remained unpaid for over a decade. Fans and legal observers are now keeping a close eye on the October hearing to see whether the actor fulfills the monetary requirements and successfully resolves this extended legal battle.
