The Karnataka High Court has issued a directive to Bollywood actor Ranveer Singh, ordering him to visit the Chamundeshwari Temple in Mysuru as a gesture of atonement for his recent mimicry of a sacred ritual depicted in the film Kantara. The controversy originated during the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) held in Goa. While interacting with the media and fellow actors, Singh mimicked the “Daiva Kola,” a deeply spiritual and ancestral ritual central to the culture of coastal Karnataka. The situation was further aggravated when Singh mistakenly referred to the revered deity as a “female ghost,” a statement that triggered widespread condemnation from the Tuluva community and cultural organizations across the state.
An FIR was subsequently registered against the actor at the High Grounds Police Station in Bengaluru. The complaint, filed by local legal activists, accused Singh of intentionally insulting religious sentiments and trivializing a centuries-old tradition for the sake of entertainment. Nagaprasanna noted that while artistic freedom is important, it does not grant public figures the liberty to mock specific religious practices or cultural identities. The court emphasized that individuals with a massive public following have a heightened responsibility to ensure their words and actions do not incite communal disharmony or hurt the sentiments of any community.
In response to the legal pressure, Ranveer Singh’s legal team presented an unconditional apology on behalf of the actor. His counsel argued that the comments were made in a moment of excitement and lacked any malicious intent or premeditated plan to cause offense. As part of the resolution process, the actor agreed to perform a spiritual visit to the Chamundi Hill Temple in Mysuru to show respect to the local traditions of Karnataka.
