In the world of high-octane cinema, actors often go to great lengths to ensure a scene feels real. However, the latest behind-the-scenes revelation from the sets of Aditya Dhar’s spy thriller, Dhurandhar: The Revenge, takes “suffering for your art” to a whole new level.
Rising actor Aditya Uppal, who plays the pivotal role of ASP Omar Haider, recently opened up about a grueling torture sequence with Bollywood superstar Ranveer Singh. According to Uppal, the scene—filmed at a weary 3:30 AM—required him to physically assault Singh’s character, Hamza Ali Mazari.
The 3:30 AM Confrontation
The scene in question is a high-stakes interrogation where Omar (Uppal) confronts Hamza (Singh) in a dimly lit lockup. Uppal revealed that during the initial takes, he was hesitant, naturally fearing he might actually injure the superstar. This caution, however, was affecting the “impact” of the shots.
“My first few shots were cut because I was being extra careful,” Uppal shared in a recent interview. “That’s when Ranveer bhai looked at me and said, ‘Aditya, hit me hard. Just go for it.'”
Ranveer, known for his immersive and “method” approach to acting, insisted that the scene wouldn’t work if the audience couldn’t feel the physical tension. He reportedly guided Uppal on how to grab his beard, where to apply pressure, and how to swing the prop—a stick reinforced with metal—to ensure it looked lethal on camera while maintaining a degree of safety.
Commitment to Authenticity
The scene wasn’t just about raw aggression; it was deeply technical. Working under the guidance of action director Aejaz Gulab, Uppal had to balance the intense emotional state of his character—who blames Hamza for the loss of his mentor—with the physical demands of the stunt.
Ranveer Singh’s preparation for the sequence was equally intense. The actor reportedly told Uppal that he had been training specifically in the gym for 15–20 minutes daily just to prepare his body for the impact of this specific action sequence.
A Breakthrough Performance
The camaraderie and trust between the two actors have clearly paid off. Dhurandhar 2 has become a massive box-office success, crossing the ₹620 crore mark domestically in its first week. Uppal’s portrayal of the Lyari Task Force officer has been hailed as a breakout performance, after the actor spent eight years navigating the struggles of the industry.
Beyond the physical intensity, Uppal shared a heartwarming personal connection to his co-star: his infant son had previously played the younger version of Ranveer’s character in Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani.
As Dhurandhar: The Revenge continues its dominant run in theaters, these stories of dedication serve as a reminder of the physical and mental toll actors undertake to deliver a “larger-than-life” cinematic experience. To
