Actor and filmmaker Riteish Deshmukh has shared his thoughts on the monumental success of Aditya Dhar’s latest cinematic offering, Dhurandhar, and its sequel, Dhurandhar: The Revenge. Speaking during a recent interaction while promoting his upcoming historical epic Raja Shivaji, the veteran actor noted that the industry must remain alert to the rapidly shifting preferences of the modern Indian audience.
Deshmukh emphasized that filmmakers can no longer afford to be indifferent to the changes happening in the cinematic landscape. He pointed out that the massive reception to the Dhurandhar franchise proves that viewers are hungry for fresh narratives and different storytelling styles. The spy-thriller duology, featuring Ranveer Singh, recently made history by crossing the ₹1000 crore net milestone at the domestic box office, a feat that Deshmukh believes sets a new benchmark for the entire fraternity.
According to Riteish, the success of such films is a positive sign for the industry as it introduces a “new kind of hero” and a different approach to commercial cinema. He remarked that it is thrilling to see audiences embrace stories that break away from traditional molds.
However, he also issued a gentle reminder to his peers: while the success of one format is encouraging, it should not lead to the assumption that only one specific genre or style will work moving forward.
The actor argued that the Indian audience is vast and diverse. He cited examples like the success of Chhaava and Tanhaji to illustrate that when a story is well-made and connects emotionally, people will always turn up in theaters to celebrate it. He suggested that it would be limiting for filmmakers to pigeonhole the audience into liking only one type of content.
Looking ahead to his own directorial venture, Raja Shivaji, which is scheduled for release on May 1, 2026, Deshmukh seems confident in this philosophy. The film, which features a massive ensemble cast including Genelia Deshmukh, Sanjay Dutt, and Abhishek Bachchan, aims to bring the inspiring life of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj to the big screen.
Riteish concluded by saying that the current era of cinema is about looking at the “larger picture.” He believes that as long as filmmakers focus on powerful, performance-driven stories that people are waiting to watch, there is room for every genre to thrive alongside massive hits like Dhurandhar.
