Salman Khan’s highly anticipated war drama, originally titled Battle of Galwan and now renamed Maatrubhumi: May War Rest in Peace, has hit a major roadblock. Recent reports indicate that the film is facing significant delays following concerns raised by the Ministry of Defence (MoD) regarding its depiction of the 2020 border standoff.

The film, directed by Apoorva Lakhia, was initially set to provide a cinematic retelling of the intense clash between Indian and Chinese troops in Ladakh’s Galwan Valley. However, sources within the industry suggest that the MoD advised the production team to pivot toward a more fictionalized narrative.

The primary concern stems from the sensitive nature of international relations. Officials reportedly expressed that a literal or overly aggressive portrayal of the 2020 events could further complicate the diplomatic equation between India and China. In response to these suggestions, the makers have reportedly:
Reshot approximately 40% of the film to include more character backstories and romantic subplots.

Insiders close to the actor state that Salman Khan was supportive of the changes. Known for peace-centric roles in films like Bajrangi Bhaijaan, Khan reportedly insisted that the movie should not just be a spectacle of violence but should highlight the human cost of war.

The actor portrays a character inspired by Colonel Bikkumalla Santosh Babu, the Maha Vir Chakra recipient who lost his life during the clash. The revised script aims to balance the bravery of the 16 Bihar Regiment with a broader message about the emotional toll conflict takes on soldiers and their families.

Despite the heavy reshoots and the title rebranding, the film’s release remains in limbo. Originally scheduled for April 17, 2026, the movie’s promotional assets have recently dropped the specific date.

“The newer cut is currently under review by relevant authorities,” a source noted. “Until the Ministry of Defence provides the final clearance, the production house cannot lock in a theatrical window.”

Rumors suggest the makers are now eyeing an Independence Day 2026 release, provided the “censor trouble” and government approvals are cleared in time. For now, fans are left waiting as the superstar attempts to navigate the delicate line between patriotic cinema and diplomatic sensitivity.
