Taking to his social media handles to vent his disappointment, the creator of the hit show India’s Got Latent shared a series of videos explaining how he noticed an unusual discrepancy in his channel analytics. Samay pointed out that while the latest episode of his show gained massive view counts very quickly—even surpassing previous popular episodes—it did not reflect a proportional increase in likes or overall engagement. Suspecting that something was off with the analytics, he looked into the backend mechanics and discovered that YouTube had altered its algorithm for counting video views.
Detailing the change, Samay explained that under YouTube’s previous framework, a view was registered only after a user watched a video for at least 30 seconds. However, with the new update, even a brief click or a single second of playback is immediately tallied as a complete view. Criticizing the platform for this modification, the comedian argued that getting a real view means a viewer genuinely consumes the content, whereas a quick one-second click is merely a glance. He added that the update creates an inflated sense of reach, making numbers look impressive on the surface while stripping away the actual metric of audience loyalty and viewer retention.
Calling out the platform directly, Samay stated that achieving milestone numbers like 100 million views means very little now because almost any video can register inflated metrics through accidental or brief clicks. Expressing disappointment over how the change affects creators who built their audience through high-engagement content, he noted that getting “free views” detracts from the genuine effort put into long-form entertainment.
