The Supreme Court of India has intervened in a high-stakes legal battle involving the family of the late industrialist Sunjay Kapur, suggesting that the parties involved put an end to their courtroom conflict. On Monday, April 27, 2026, a bench comprising Justices JB Pardiwala and Vijay Bishnoi issued a notice to Priya Kapur, the widow of the late businessman, following a plea filed by his mother, Rani Kapur.
During the hearing, the bench expressed deep concern over the nature of the dispute, particularly given the advanced age of the matriarch. The court strongly advised both sides to consider mediation as a way to settle their differences once and for all.
The dispute centers around the Sona Group Family Trust, which Rani Kapur, now 80 years old, claims was created through fraudulent means. In her petition, she alleges that the trust was established using forged documents while she was in a vulnerable state following a stroke in 2017.
Rani Kapur contends that the legal structure of the trust was designed to strip her of her rights and control over the vast family estate and the Sona Group of companies. She has sought a court order to declare the trust null and void and to prevent her daughter-in-law, Priya Kapur, from acting on its behalf.
The Supreme Court bench was direct in its assessment of the situation. Addressing the legal representatives, the justices remarked that at 80 years old, Rani Kapur should not be embroiled in prolonged litigation.
The court’s observations included:
Wasted Resources:The bench described the ongoing legal fight as a waste of time and energy for everyone involved.
Mediation First: The justices emphasized that it would be in the best interest of the entire family to resolve the matter peacefully and equitably through a mediator.
Age as a Factor: The court repeatedly noted, “This is not the age for your client to fight,” urging a more compassionate and practical approach to the inheritance issue.
The tension within the Kapur family escalated significantly after the sudden passing of Sunjay Kapur in June 2025 due to a cardiac arrest. Since then, multiple legal fronts have opened up:
Rani Kapur and Priya Kapur are locked in a struggle over the control of the family’s assets, estimated to be worth thousands of crores.
Proceedings are also active in the Delhi High Court, where children from Sunjay Kapur’s previous marriage to actor Karisma Kapoor have raised their own concerns regarding their father’s will and estate.
The Supreme Court has now asked Priya Kapur and 22 other respondents to file their replies to the petition. While the court stated it is willing to hear the matter on its legal merits if necessary, its primary goal is to convince the family to sit across a table and find a middle ground.
Senior Advocate Shyam Divan, representing Rani Kapur, argued that protective orders are necessary to prevent the further transfer of assets while the case is pending. The matter is scheduled for further hearing in early May, but the court’s message remains clear: a family resolution is far better than a judicial one. To
