Tabu says women are judged more harshly for ageing in films: ‘They want to show you the mirror’

The critically acclaimed actress Tabu has recently spoken out about the persistent double standards and harsh scrutiny women in the film industry face as they grow older. In a candid interview with Harper’s Bazaar India, the actress observed that society often appears much more preoccupied with a woman’s age than the woman herself ever is. Tabu noted that people frequently try to “show you the mirror” regarding your appearance, ironically suggesting that they act as if a woman doesn’t already have a mirror at home to see herself. She criticized this cultural obsession with ageing, pointing out that public discussions often shift toward judgment rather than acknowledging the natural reality of life. For Tabu, the way the world treats ageing as a sudden, shocking revelation is fundamentally flawed because it is a gradual process that everyone experiences and lives through every single day.

Expanding on this thought, Tabu emphasized that nobody wakes up one morning and finds they have aged twenty years overnight. She explained that the transition from being twenty to forty-five is a steady journey of evolution, yet the entertainment industry and society at large often treat it like a dramatic, overnight transformation. The actress shared that she finds it strange when people ask pointed questions about her age, as she is the one living her life and experiencing her own growth continuously. This grounded perspective comes at a time when Tabu is enjoying a highly successful phase in her career, proving that talent and relevance are not bound by youthful stereotypes. She recently starred in the horror-comedy Bhooth Bangla alongside Akshay Kumar, which released in April 2026, and is currently preparing for a highly anticipated reunion with Nagarjuna in his 100th film, King100.

Beyond the topic of ageism, Tabu also touched upon the pressures of conforming to industry norms, revealing that she was often advised to be less honest when turning down film offers. She recalled being told to use “date issues” or scheduling conflicts as a polite excuse rather than giving a genuine critique of a script. However, the actress admitted she never understood the need for such pretenses, stating that if she didn’t like a script, she preferred to say so directly. This uncompromising honesty has been a hallmark of her decades-long career, allowing her to choose roles that offer a true sense of self-expression. By rejecting the “norm” and embracing her own pace, Tabu continues to challenge the industry’s narrow beauty standards, showing that a settled sense of self is far more powerful than any public perception or external pressure to remain ageless.
