The Road Not Taken: Abhishek Bachchan on Why He Chose Kabaddi Over the IPL

In the glitzy intersection of Bollywood and the Indian Premier League (IPL), the Bachchan name is a rare omission. While peers like Shah Rukh Khan, Juhi Chawla, and Preity Zinta became the faces of cricket franchises back in 2008, Abhishek Bachchan took a different, quieter path.

In a recent industry forum, the actor and sports entrepreneur finally shared the candid reasoning behind his decision to skip the “cricket gold rush” in favor of sports like Kabaddi and Football. His explanation paints a picture of a man who values grassroots impact over established glamour.

Abhishek Bachchan is often viewed through the lens of his family’s immense legacy, but he is quick to point out that in 2008, he was a young professional still building his own financial foundation. When the IPL auctions first opened, the entry barrier was incredibly high.

“I’ll be very honest—at the time, it was way out of my league financially,” Bachchan admitted. He explained that as a “fledgling actor” who had only just started seeing commercial success, the multi-million dollar commitment required to own a cricket team wasn’t a practical move.

Rather than stretching his resources thin to be a minority stakeholder in a crowded room, he decided to wait for an opportunity where he could be a primary driver of change.

For Abhishek, sports ownership isn’t about sitting in a VIP box and waving at the cameras. He describes himself as an “obsessive” owner who likes to be involved in the grit of the game.

“I am a sportsman at heart. I don’t want to just be a face associated with a winning brand; I want to help build the brand,” he noted. He felt that cricket in India was already a “well-oiled machine” managed expertly by the BCCI. He questioned what value he could truly add to a sport that was already the most popular in the country.

This led him to the Pro Kabaddi League (PKL) and the Indian Super League (ISL). By founding the Jaipur Pink Panthers, he took a traditional Indian sport that lacked a modern platform and helped turn it into a television phenomenon.

The gamble paid off. The Jaipur Pink Panthers won the inaugural PKL season and have remained one of the most popular franchises in the league.

While he is currently content with his ventures in Kabaddi and Football (with Chennaiyin FC), the actor hasn’t completely slammed the door on cricket. However, his criteria remain the same: it has to make business sense, and he has to be able to contribute more than just his celebrity status.

For now, Bachchan seems happy being the “underdog” owner who turned a rural sport into a national sensation, proving that in the world of sports, you don’t always need a cricket bat to hit a home run. To know such latest updates tuned tellyboosters.com Thank you!
