Having spotted her incredible acting talent as a child artist in the popular 1993 Doordarshan television drama Humrahi, the filmmaker felt she would be the absolute perfect choice to play the role of Nikki, the younger sister of Shah Rukh Khan’s character, Sunil. However, a teenage Sadiya was so fiercely infatuated with the actor that she flatly refused the sibling character during her first meeting. She directly argued with Kundan Shah, telling him that her eyes would naturally reflect her true, intense romantic feelings on camera, which would completely ruin the sibling dynamic required for the script.
When the director laughingly asked her what exactly she wanted to do instead, the young actress boldly declared that she only wanted to play his on-screen girlfriend or the main love interest, Anna, which was eventually portrayed by Suchitra Krishnamoorthi.
