The legendary charm of Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan has captivated millions of fans globally for over three decades, but it turns out that even his on-screen co-stars were not immune to his magnetic persona during the early days of his career. In a delightful piece of nostalgia that has taken the internet by storm, versatile actress Sadiya Siddiqui recently opened up about her deep infatuation with King Khan during the making of the 1994 cult classic romantic comedy Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa. Speaking on a popular celebrity interview podcast hosted by Siddharth Kannan, the actress made a hilarious yet heartwarming confession about how her real-life crush on the superstar almost made her reject a major career-defining opportunity because she simply could not bear the thought of being seen as his sibling.

Recalling the casting process of the iconic film, Sadiya Siddiqui revealed that she was completely drowning in love with Shah Rukh Khan when director Kundan Shah initially approached her for the movie. Having spotted her incredible acting talent as a child artist in the popular 1993 Doordarshan television drama Humrahi, the filmmaker felt she would be the absolute perfect choice to play the role of Nikki, the younger sister of Shah Rukh Khan’s character, Sunil. However, a teenage Sadiya was so fiercely infatuated with the actor that she flatly refused the sibling character during her first meeting. She directly argued with Kundan Shah, telling him that her eyes would naturally reflect her true, intense romantic feelings on camera, which would completely ruin the sibling dynamic required for the script.

When the director laughingly asked her what exactly she wanted to do instead, the young actress boldly declared that she only wanted to play his on-screen girlfriend or the main love interest, Anna, which was eventually portrayed by Suchitra Krishnamoorthi. Since the director explained that she was far too young for the main romantic lead, Sadiya went to extreme lengths the following day to prove she could easily look mature enough for the superstar. She picked out her absolute best adult dress, applied heavy makeup, and dramatically curled her hair to look like a grown woman. Reflecting on that funny attempt, she jokingly admitted that she looked like a complete cartoon as a little girl trying too hard to look older, prompting Kundan Shah to laugh affectionately and give her absolutely no option but to accept the sister’s role.

Despite her internal romantic dilemma, Sadiya proved her mettle as a highly professional performer, successfully masking her immense real-life crush to deliver a beautifully innocent and memorable performance as Nikki. She shared that while she never had the immense courage to express her romantic feelings to Shah Rukh Khan directly on the sets, the superstar was incredibly perceptive and always treated her with exceptional care and warmth. She fondly remembered a particularly exhausting shooting schedule on a hot beach for a dream sequence, where the superstar immediately noticed her sitting out in the blazing sun and insisted that she go sit inside the cool comfort of his personal car and drink plenty of water while he finished his remaining solo shots.

The actress also expressed her deep admiration for how Shah Rukh Khan’s humility and kind nature remained entirely unchanged even after he achieved global superstardom in the subsequent decades. She recalled a chance encounter years later at a premium dubbing studio where she assumed the megastar would have completely forgotten her after so many years. To her utter surprise, the actor instantly recognized her from a distance, called out her name with immense joy, and wrapped her in a long, warm embrace. Sadiya even recalled playfully scolding him during that meeting for his continuous habits of smoking cigarettes and drinking too much Diet Coke, proving that the unique, affectionate bond they forged on the sets of their 1994 masterpiece continues to remain special after all these years.
