Tigmanshu Dhulia Explains Why He Will Never Direct Urban Love Stories

Acclaimed filmmaker and actor Tigmanshu Dhulia has officially ruled out the possibility of ever directing an urban romance, stating that love stories are simply not worth making in today’s climate. Known for his gritty, grounded narratives such as Paan Singh Tomar, Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster, and Ghamasaan, Dhulia revealed that he personally finds modern love stories completely uninteresting and prefers to focus his artistic energy on far more compelling global and social realities.

Explaining his stance, the director pointed out that the world is currently facing far bigger issues than personal relationships, making simple romantic plots feel insignificant by comparison. He mentioned that with so many global events unfolding, he sees little reason to invest time into a story that only involves two people. While he admitted that films should remain entertaining rather than sounding like news reports, he clarified that he would only ever consider a romance if it featured deep social, linguistic, or historical conflicts, citing classics like Mughal-e-Azam and Ek Duje Ke Liye as rare examples.

The National School of Drama graduate also touched upon his dual career as a director and actor, describing directing as his primary core work while viewing acting strictly as a luxury. Having made an unexpected on-screen impact in iconic projects like Gangs of Wasseypur, Dhulia remains focused on bringing meaningful, multi-layered stories to the big screen rather than typical Bollywood romances.
