Renowned director Tigmanshu Dhulia has shared an intriguing update regarding his long-gestating biopic on legendary filmmaker K Asif, bringing renewed excitement to cinema enthusiasts. Known for giving Indian cinema the magnificent historical masterpiece Mughal-e-Azam, K Asif’s life story is being carefully translated to the screen by Dhulia, who has spent years perfecting the narrative structure.
While Dhulia continues to navigate multiple film commitments, including his recent theatrical project Ghamasaan and the Nawazuddin Siddiqui starrer Woh Phir Kabhi Dikha Nahi, his dedication to the K Asif biopic remains steadfast.
He revealed that balancing routine professional projects is essential to run his household, which occasionally pauses his writing process, but he has already completed around 100 scenes for the script.
Taking a lighthearted jab at the extended development timeline of his script, the director humorously noted that his biopic is taking almost as long to write as Mughal-e-Azam took to make, marking a creative milestone as the story now reaches the crucial moment where the iconic 1960 epic officially begins shooting.
Rather than focusing solely on the grand sets, opulence, and visual spectacle associated with K Asif’s most famous masterpiece, Tigmanshu Dhulia is steering the narrative toward a deeply personal human drama.
The filmmaker explained that the project will focus closely on Asif as an individual, highlighting his artistic vision, personal struggles, complex career, and short life, which ended at the age of 48.
Across a span of 26 years, K Asif directed only five films, two of which remained unfinished due to the sheer scale of his ambitions. By focusing on the human side rather than cinematic grandeur, Dhulia aims to capture the spirit of an extraordinary visionary whose drive often outpaced the practical realities of the film industry.
The upcoming biopic promises to offer movie lovers an intimate look into the mind and life of one of Bollywood’s most legendary storytellers.
