In a move that has sent shockwaves through the Hindi film industry, Bollywood star Varun Dhawan is reportedly in advanced discussions to headline director Vivek Ranjan Agnihotri’s upcoming ambitious project, Operation Sindoor.

This collaboration marks a significant departure for both the actor and the filmmaker, promising a high-octane narrative rooted in real-life military strategy and national security.

Following the massive success of Border 2 earlier this year, Varun Dhawan has emerged as a preferred choice for patriotic and intense dramatic roles. Sources close to the development suggest that producer Bhushan Kumar and Vivek Agnihotri personally approached Dhawan with the script, and the actor has expressed a strong interest in the protagonist’s role.

“Varun is looking to balance his filmography with a mix of commercial entertainers and hard-hitting, reality-based dramas. The script of Operation Sindoor is something he found extremely compelling,” a source revealed.

Dhawan, who recently took a short break to spend time with his newborn daughter, Lara, is now actively looking to lock his next big project before he begins work on his July commitments.

The film is based on the book Operation Sindoor: The Untold Story of India’s Deep Strikes Inside Pakistan by Lt Gen KJS ‘Tiny’ Dhillon (Retd). The narrative focuses on the events surrounding India’s retaliatory strikes following the tragic 2025 terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir.

It explores the first instance of a nuclear-armed nation carrying out deep strikes inside another nuclear-armed nation, specifically targeting terror infrastructure.

Known for his research-heavy approach, Agnihotri has stated that the film is “not just a project, but a revelation.” He emphasized that the team has conducted ground-level research with various wings of the Indian Armed Forces to ensure the portrayal of modern warfare is accurate and avoids unnecessary sensationalism.

The news of this partnership comes at a busy time for Dhawan. While he is gearing up for the release of the romantic comedy Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai on May 22, he also has the action-horror sequel Bhediya 2 slated for later this year.

If finalized, Operation Sindoor will likely be mounted on a massive scale, reinforcing the current trend of nationalist cinema that has dominated the Indian box office. While an official announcement from the makers is still awaited, the prospect of Agnihotri’s gritty storytelling paired with Dhawan’s star power has already made it one of the most anticipated films of 2027.
