The South Indian film industry is mourning the sudden loss of veteran Telugu actor and producer GV Narayana Rao, who passed away in Hyderabad at the age of 73 following a severe heart attack. The news of his demise was confirmed by fellow actor Karate Kalyani and the Movie Artists Association (MAA), triggering a wave of sorrow across Tollywood. Narayana Rao had been dealing with age-related health issues for a brief period before breathing his last on Wednesday evening. With a career spanning nearly five decades, he earned immense respect as a versatile actor, a successful film producer, and a beloved television personality who remained deeply connected to cinema throughout his lifetime.
Having trained at the Madras Film Institute during the early 1970s, Narayana Rao shared a special bond with industry icons. He was a batchmate and close friend of Tamil superstar Rajinikanth during their institute days, and he also forged an enduring friendship with Megastar Chiranjeevi. Narayana Rao made his acting debut in director K. Balachander’s acclaimed 1976 classic Anthuleni Katha, winning a Nandi Award for his performance. Over the years, he starred in over 100 films, showcasing his acting prowess in movies like Muthyala Pallaki, Chilakamma Cheppindi, Oka Oori Katha, Gang Leader, and Hitler. Beyond feature films, he became a household name on the small screen through popular daily soaps like Pasupu Kumkuma and Sundarakanda. As a producer, he backed several blockbuster hits starring Chiranjeevi, including Yamudiki Mogudu, Devanthakudu, and Chettaniki Kallu Levu.
Expressing profound shock and sorrow over the loss of his long-time friend and collaborator, Chiranjeevi shared a heartfelt tribute on social media. The Megastar recalled their decades-long journey filled with sweet memories and praised Narayana Rao’s distinctive acting talent that earned him a special spot in the hearts of cinema lovers. Chiranjeevi offered his deepest condolences to the bereaved family, praying for eternal peace for the departed soul. As members of the Telugu Film Producers Council and numerous industry colleagues continue to extend their condolences, final rites are scheduled to take place at the Vaikunta Mahaprasthanam crematorium in Hyderabad.
