Rajpal Yadav Gets Major Relief; Delhi High Court Says No More Jail for Now

In a significant turn of events for Bollywood veteran Rajpal Yadav, the Delhi High Court on Wednesday confirmed that the actor will not be sent back to jail in connection with his long-running cheque bounce cases. The court cited “substantial payments” made by the actor as the primary reason for extending his relief.

The Court’s Decision
Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma, presiding over the matter, observed that Yadav has shown a genuine intent to resolve his financial liabilities. During the hearing on March 18, 2026, the court noted that the actor has already deposited approximately ₹4.25 crore with the complainant, M/s Murali Projects Pvt Ltd.

“He is not running away. He is here, appearing in court, and has already spent time in custody. Since substantial payments have been made, I see no reason to send him back to jail right now,” the Bench remarked. The court has now extended the suspension of his sentence until April 1, 2026, giving him further time to argue his main petition against the original conviction.

Background of the Dispute
The legal battle dates back to 2010, involving a loan of ₹5 crore taken by Yadav for his directorial debut, Ata Pata Laapata. The complainant alleged that the amount, including interest, had ballooned significantly over the years. In 2018, a magisterial court convicted the actor after several cheques issued by him were dishonored, sentencing him to six months in prison—a decision later upheld by a sessions court in 2019.

Earlier this year, in February 2024, the court had taken a stern view of “repeated defaults” and ordered Yadav to surrender at Tihar Jail. However, after he deposited ₹1.5 crore shortly after his surrender, the court granted him interim bail on February 16, allowing him to walk free temporarily.

“I Won’t Go Back”
Speaking through his legal team and appearing in person, the actor expressed a commitment to clearing the remaining dues. While the complainant’s counsel argued for the cancellation of his bail due to the long history of the case, the court remained firm that the recent financial compliance was sufficient to keep the actor out of custody for the time being.

The High Court has also asked Yadav to return with a formal proposal if he intends to settle the remaining dispute entirely. If a settlement is not reached, the court will proceed to hear the merits of his appeal against the conviction.
For now, the actor, known for his iconic comic timing in films like Bhool Bhulaiyaa and Phir Hera Pheri, can breathe a sigh of relief as he stays home with his family rather than returning to a prison cell. To know such latest
