From Selling Cable Connections to Bollywood Stardom: Shaan Recalls His Early Days of Hustle

Long before he became the voice behind unforgettable romantic anthems like “Tanha Dil” and “Chand Sifarish,” popular playback singer Shaan had to navigate a very different and difficult reality. In a recent candid conversation, the musician took a trip down memory lane, opening up about a challenging phase of his youth when he took on various odd jobs to help keep his family afloat after a major personal tragedy.

The singer, whose real name is Shantanu Mukherjee, revealed that his life took a drastic turn at the vulnerable age of 13 when his father, music director Manas Mukherjee, passed away. The sudden loss left the family in a financially tight spot, living in a rented house and trying to figure out how to manage daily expenses. Reflecting on that time, Shaan shared that while the emotional blow was heavy, the immediate need to survive pushed him to find work wherever he could.

Rather than dwelling on the hardship, a young Shaan stepped up alongside his mother and his sister, Sagarika. He recalled that during the late 1980s, cable television was just starting to make its way into Indian households. Seizing the opportunity, he began selling cable TV connections on a commission basis to bring in extra money.

But his hustle did not stop there. Determined to contribute as much as possible, Shaan also gave private tuitions to school children and worked as a salesman at a local clothing boutique named Looks.

He noted that he was ready to do just about any decent job that came his way to ease the financial pressure on his mother, who had suddenly become the sole anchor of the household. Shaan expressed immense respect for his mother, describing her as a fiercely proud and strong woman who single-handedly raised her children under tough circumstances.

Interestingly, despite coming from a musical lineage and singing jingles as a young child, Shaan confessed that he never actually envisioned music as a viable, long-term career. Around the time of his father’s passing, his voice began to change as he entered his teenage years, causing his childhood singing assignments to dry up completely. During that transition, he viewed singing merely as a casual, sporadic way to earn a few extra bucks rather than a primary passion.

It was only much later, as he continued balancing college, tuitions, and boutique work, that fate took a turn. His eventual collaboration with his sister under a major recording label propelled them into the pop music scene of the 1990s, paving the way for his legendary solo career.

Today, Shaan stands as one of the most respected and enduring voices in the Indian music industry. Looking back at his journey from selling pens and cable wires to buying a luxury home, his story serves as a grounded reminder that the road to stardom is often paved with quiet resilience and hard work.
